Rambus, try using .obj or .x format instead of .3ds
Smoothing groups of .3ds are not implemented IMHO.

two texture coordinated mesh could be:
1. Pulsar LMTools (.lmts)
2. DELED (.dmf)
3. My3D (.my3d)
4. OCT (.oct)
5. Quake 3 levels (.bsp)

So if you will use any of this formats the problem will gone...

could this be used to compile the irrlicht.dll into the program as well, so you only need the one .exe file? Technically - no. Practically - yes, but with workaround. You can compile Irrlicht.dll into your exe but when you will start your program it'll extract it to temporary directory... Not the p...
