I use Redhat 9 here at work, because the people here who really know about Linux use Redhat - as do our Linux servers. Personally I think that if the engine is good enough, the best 'splash screens' for 3d games are ones rendered in real time by the engine itself.
Unfortunately ATM I can only think of X-Beyond the Frontier and X-Tension as examples of games which do this...
