Where can I get free models

Post by Peter Müller »

Hi there!
I need some (free) models for a techdemo (tank, jeep, airplain).
Anyone how knows a link?

A good source for this might be http://gunpoint-3d.com/

They have tanks and jeeps.

Mostly for sale, but with good free ones as well -see the bottom of the home page:

Jagdpanther
M1 Abrams
Patrol boat
Dodge WC-51

Those models you linked to are too complex to be useful. Far too many polygons.

free tank here...

Also a military jet, bomb, sledghammer, mailbox, a map of Kuwait, and a pumpkin.

They are not low-poly models however.

Why don't you import them into 3dsmax, apply an "optimize" or a "multires" modifier to them and reduce polygon count until you get something useful. Then you might export form max to any format you need.

@stodge:
My computer can render 1 in real-time, but not 10. So you're right.

@afecelis:
Where can I get it for free (not kazaa or something like this)?
Is there a "lite-version"?

There's a trial version of 3dsmax6 here:

it works for 30 days

This freeware 3d modeller can output models in at least one format (3ds) that Irrlicht can read, if you're interesting in making your own models. :)

Ooh, I hate that optimise feature. You are *much* better off rebuilding faces manually, the optimise function really screws with shading by putting triangles in bad positions. You could do optimise and try to fix the errors but I found it a big pain in the arse, you might do a little better.

@The_Mega_ZZTer:
Thanks, but I'm not creative enough ;)

@Tyn:
Of course, you're right. A modeller can optimise a model much better then a algorithmus.
But I'm no modeller :(

You may by right. But I'm really to increative.
You know the car from the Tokamak Techdemo (only a few boxes)? I tried to rebuild it - and failed :(

In school my art grad is also a 4 (think in us it would by a D or something)
