Tattoo - interesting program that can paint on 3d model - formats 3ds, obj, lwo, X, b3d this is similar to commercial products like bodypaint 3D and so on

EDIT: I take it back.

this is actually useful I think I installed and tried it and it does a lot more then just simple tatoo style stuff.

this is actually a very quick painting tool but I haven't tried saving yet.

Yes tattoo is usefull, I compared it woth Bodypaint and Deep Paint
For saving texure simply go to File ---- Save Modified texture and it should save texture to place where is model located

Imo, deeppaint3d is superior, I've used it extensively, but the price of the other is way better ;)

3d painting is good, just consider you need some external cool tool to do good UVs; no matter how good are you on painting and 3d painting: bad UVs will make all impossible. I recommend tho a mix of 3d painting and 2d painting, I usually do all finishing detail in 2d packages...3d painting is great for seams, speed it up, quick overall light baking, etc, etc...and of course, for organics,rocks.
