I dont quite remember if this forum does it or not, but have it send an activation email?

In that case we have their email address. And i know no one would sit here and register a new email just for spam, and then activate it to spam the forum. Too long of a process.

Plus, you can batch activate, So everyone who registered do like 2-3 bath activates a day, so the spammer has to wait and most lily will say screw it.

Another option would be to have a bot sit in the forums and look for repeated lines in posts. As in links because ive noticed all spammers put <a href="">Whatever they are spamming keyword</a>
<a href="">Whatever they are spamming keyword2</a>
<a href="">Whatever they are spamming keyword3</a>
ect ect.... have the bot look for repeated HTML code in a post. Because i have never seen a User of the irrlicht that actually uses Irrlicht post html links.... It only tells you its off in the corner....

Also, there are many plguins to help fight spammers, ive used 3 or 4 at one time and they might not be 100% effective, but they do block 75+% of it.

E-mail activation won't stop the bots - they just set up their own email server and use blahblah@somedomain.com where somedomain.com is their own domain.
For reference try looking here:
http://www.wc3jass.com/memberlist.php?m ... C&start=50
That is a link to page #2 of the memberlist at my forum, where almost all the members there are bots. If you look at their email addresses you should notice that they have no problem getting an email address. If you go to page 1 can see that near the end of January, where I set up the very simple static question, ALL bot registrations stopped.

The bots that post here are not humans, they are programs designed to avoid spam filters and CAPTCHA's. If 10,000 posts grants their company just ONE more customer the bot has made profit, since running a program costs almost nothing. The programmers of those bots most likely don't know that Irrlicht's forum exists; their bots automatically crawl the web searching for phpBB forums to spam. This is why a simple question with the same answer every time managed to stop all bots at my site: The bots are programmed specifically against the standard spam blockers.

The short story is we just need a really simple one-answer solution that is unique to this site.

The email should send out a key that you have to manually copy and paste into an activation form along with your username and password.

You should then have to send a self-addressed envelope with a copy of your high school diploma to Niko's house so he can approve you personally. That should only take a week or two. Then, he will run a background check and decide if he can approve you as a forum member.

Is it possible to log the IP address of the spammers when they register to the forums? If it is, just ban their IP so they can't create an account without changing ISP. A bit radical maybe, but I don't want to go to the beginners help forum (as I often do :D ) and see threads saying "Free adult porn, no registration". It's a forum for a 3D engine FFS...
Tell me what you cherish most. Give me the pleasure of taking it away.
