Video Card Reccomendations

Post by monkeycracks »

Before reading on, note that I do not have PCI Express or AGP slots, nor enough money to get another video card AND a new motherboard that probably won't fit my tower case anyways.

I was looking at this for a replacement for my Radeon 9250(Virtually no shader support and only 128mb memory). I would really like a 512mb PCI card(NOT PCI EXPRESS), if anyone knows if any(which I doubt), could you please point me to them.

I'm planning to run Oblivion(I don't care what graphics setting). I have a 2.53ghz processor and 512mb of RAM(thinking about getting another gig).

Didn't know there are still even that many PCs without AGP out there. :)

I'd recommend you one thing: Wait! :)

I don't know your other PC components etc. but I'd say you should just wait a little bit more (christmas is coming too!) and then get a new graphics card together with a new mainboard (depending on your other components etc. shouldn't be more than 50-75$ too).

Just seen you also added a 150 $ radeon card. Not 100% sure but I'd take a card that's a little bit cheaper but offers AGP together with an AGP board. Should worth more looking at your PC's performance.

The problem is that I have a very small tower (it's the model of Dell that I got 2 years ago). That's the only reason my motherboard doesn't have PCI Express/AGP slots.. it's just too small.

I looked at the Oblivion FAQ and it showed that the video cards I posted in the first post are supported, but I don't really want to run around in lowest details on everything and still have 5 minutes loading times.

However, if I have to get a new board I'll get a PCI Express slotted one
(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... GOOGLEBASE) and then just get a new PCI Express video card (I saw a few very nice ones and this would put my Christmas spendings at 250$ish).

Only other problem, I don't want to wait until Christmas =\ and I don't have another way of obtaining money.

I could get a new tower, but that would also cost me money I don't have.

My mom just bought me a new pc with dual core 1.6ghz and a gig of ram

I'm hoping/praying this comes with PCIe or AGP slot.

If it's new, then it's vanishingly unlikely to come without PCIe. The only thing to watch out for is some really low end mobos claim to support PCIex16 when they really only support PCIex8. Google on the mobo before buying a card to go with it.

I asked tech support if it had PCIe or AGP slot and he said it had several PCI slots.. so I asked again, this time being more specific and not using ancronyms and whatnot.. it has a PCIe slot but I didn't ask if its x16 or x8.
