is the program you are using to make 3D models free? And if it is can you tell me the name of it? 8)

oh, and your work is really good :D

You probably won't get any better than Blender if you are looking for a free professional open-source modeling program. Blender has even be used for the special effects in Spiderman 2, that is how professional it is.

er...no, as far as am concerned was only for some preview/camera traveling.

the particles are no where near cinema quality.

yet tho I agree, is best bet for indies.

Keyword of the day:

If he was looking for something "professional" then I would say Maya, or Lightwave.

Either way, I don't think his intent is for cinema quality, but Blender provides some amazing things.

Blender interface is bit confusing ...or quit a bit ;)

If you are beginning with computer modeling I recommend you to start with something else.

Personally I can recommend you Wings3D: http://www.wings3d.com Its easy to use and have quit quick learning curve due to well designed, intuitive interface.

This is what I got out of it when attempting hi poly modeling some years ago:

or.....Max! heheheee...very few blender people like it. I worked professionally with it for years. reaally good. Tho buggy, in times.

hey, I know very well those images...Rememeber to an extent am a blender user (since 2000 or so..) ...just I only like to use its aniamtion and some render.
Either way, I don't think his intent is for cinema quality, but Blender provides some amazing things.
Of course. For any indy, short film creator,(indeedy, for larger films, first it need faster and complete renderer, tho a pair of very nice ones are coming... ) etc, imo, is a jewel. I was just pointing out it does not compete with Spiderman or any cinema film requirements. A dumb detail, I know, but to often hear exageration talk about blender, and is something that harms it more than anything...wasn't your case, I notice.

Amen to what Arras says. While is a very wip, and was definitely left as the very wip stage, I was doing this model as a mix of an experiment to see how far could I get detailing using subd modeling without chunking Wings (is not very good on very hi res meshes, but wanted to check how much of it was a myth, as well on how much detail could I do in wings to delay the point of going to Zbrush(I have it) or to Blender sculpt... I was amazed to see that in this crappy machine it could let me detail a lot more than I thought, and I really love the control of subd mdoelling...at some point of every project that needs it, ie for a million tris or more mesh, one jumps to mudbox, sculpt, or zbrush, and...surely another machine, lol)

I prefer to model with wings or metasequoia, but seems is only a few of us with this preference...

Image

btw, as I say was left at very wip stage... was for a very short (some seconds) movie that planned to make with a very good friend of mine who worked with me at certain company...

Before this I only do low poly models. But I've started to try hi poly by this week.Using max (I'm not that familiar with blender yet). So far only the head has been done.

Is that the low poly normalmapped version vermeer? because if those shoulders were hidden i would have thought it was the high poly version

Anyway i love blender so here is a experiment i did in 15 mins (i made the low poly head from another time)

I cheated and made a highpoly version by multi-resing the low poly version (no beziers nurbs or lots of hardwork), then i used blenders wonderful sculpting tools to make hair, beard and a scar. i Changed him into a monkey too with the grab tool

Image

In that pic im rendering 3 million polygons on a gf6200 1gb of slow ram and a very old athlon. On linux this only uses 200megs of ram  i couldnt even get 1 million on vista.

hi poly. It wasn't thought for realtime, t was going for a hi res movie, textured and animated(but animated using the low cage, which wasnt exactly a low pol version for games). The shoulders(like rest of the body) aren't really worked out, is only the head which has a bit of more work. But no where near a "detailed" stage. For hi res modeling, that is. I have a more advanced version with clothes and weapons, but seems I deleted the folder where I had screenies and the actual *.wings file, lol.. Anyway, is a dead project since years.

Interesting the head test, specially in that machine. Do you rotate now the viewport and paint with sculpt, and edit in general, with no slow down? I'd doubt it...the key thing is till when a package remains "easy to work with" performance wise. As indeed I modeled several thousands tris heads in Amorphium 1, many years ago, but was jumpy.Could do the work, but wasn't eficient for production/comfort. If you get no delay or 'jump', with that model count -in viewport-...would be interesting to know... And in which OS. I have 2x your ram, probably more powerful cpu, and better 3d card... (7600gt) ...and I strongly doubt I'd edit comfortly a 3 million tris head...so, am curious :)

Code: Select all

im in ubuntu, if you look at the ram consumption you can see its not really stressing my pc.

But yes its running at 5fps bc of my gpu, but thats amazing compared to the 1 frame per 15 seconds i had on vista.

well, by no means that's gonna be practical, in deep, good detailing, not just some fast bumps...Anyway, still amazing that it can go with 3M polies...

vista...is eating already one gb or almost...is logical that it practically dies with one gb and that model.

anyway, i don't think you really need 3M polies, with 500k or 1M, allows a heck of a lot of detail, or you can just add that sort of detail only in some areas. And the others, being hi, not so dense.
