Billboard opacity

Billboard opacity

How do one make the billboard transparent without getting the image also transparent.I was trying to add some billboard trees and they appear transparent as in a particle system.Or should I use a color key?please help.

Is there no way? Will i have to wait for EMT_TRANSPARENT_ALPHA_CHANNEL?
