Billboards need to stand vertical only

Post by WhytWulf »

I've noticed something about the billboards which would be nice if there was an additional flag/setting to enable/disable this feature.

If you look at alot of new FPS games, and the way they do grass/weeds they use billboards, but the billboard may face the camera but it only stands upright, so if the camera moves above them and looks down they it sees the billboard on its edge.
It would be nice to have a flag so you can have either the billboard in VerticalFacing(like grass) or in a ViewFreeFacing(for explosions)...

Actually this would then allow the rain to look like points when looking straight up/down with long particles (IE Rain).. I guess..

Okay, just had a thought.. the new FPS games, might not use billboards, but 2 sided planes with the image.. so this feature might not work :(

Its a good idea. I'Ve talked about that somewhere in the forum, and this is something which will be inserted in some of the next versions.

i think, its also imprtant, that a billboard is spinning around a vector. ok i'll explain:

If you programm a game. There is a weapon which is shooting flashes or something like this. if someone shoots, it mustnt look always to the spectator, and it mustnt spin only vertically

I would love to see such a feature in Irrlicht too :)

I thought about this a few days ago... im not experienced, but you should be able to do it with the current release, shouldnt you? Perhaps you can just use a 3d plane (like WhytWulf said) and texture it?

It would be nice posting your ideas to achieve someting like this :)
