Most likely not but the progress of OpenGL for Linux will go A LOT slower if Niko has to work on .NET..NET is causing the death of linux ......

Am I the only one who is very excited by this? It opens the engine out to developers who haven't used C++ before ( and will make me look a C# as a serious alternative to C++ ). Then again, I am very much a cup half full type of guy Very interesting, now if only I used .NET instead of VCP6, lol. I doubt it will kill Linux developement, why should it? As far as I am aware it is only a case of fixing some OGL bugs though I could be wrong. It will make the comman posts of "Do I need to learn C++" a lot less heart breaking for new users.
"From then on, Irrlicht.NET will be included in every SDK release and become an important part of the engine."
That is what is upsetting me!!! WHY INCLUDE THAT IN THE SDK? There should be a separate package for that... Niko, you are only making the downloads bigger for people who don't want to use that. Please make it a separate package.

no, seriously it's nice that irrlicht goes that kind of progressive way but some poeple are addicted to c++ and don't like c# and any other .NET things

I could care less about C# Sounds like another Micro$oft ONLY product. Only works on Windows, can't be cross-platform, etc.
Think about it, the next version of windows won't be out until 2007. 64-bit Linux is already here.
I personally believe that Linux is superior and has faster updates.

To all those who say .NET means the death of Linux... you are completely wrong. .NET is an (Microsoft) open standard. There is a big project called Mono which is a free .NET implementation(including Linux and Mac OS as target OS).
You can check it out at http://www.go-mono.com. The C# compiler is already functional, and ASP.NET is in the way. Mono isn't finished yet but its future is promising and is considered one of the most important open-source project out there right now.
.NET is a good thing, don't fear it. Furthermore, C# is very cool. Give it a try, either using VS.NET or one of the in-development Linux C# ide's.

Wether a software is superior or not doesn't mind. Put that in your head. Mac OS was always better than Windows, The Sims sucks, the FIFA series .. well no comments XD. In the games industry what matters is what MOST people likes and uses. Changing that is not our task, so we have to adapt. Of course there are some brave linux developers, guardians of justice etc , but it's a lot easier to make money using the imposed technologies.disanti wrote:I could care less about C# Sounds like another Micro$oft ONLY product. About 64 bits.. .NET is a great advantage to developers, because they don't have to code their apps twice(a 32b and 64b version). And the 64-bit Windows XP will be available next year, professional developers such as Epic Games o Crytech are already using the beta to port their games to 64-bit.
Right now I'm taking a break on game-dev because I really don't want to port all my games to 64-bit. This sounds like a pretty big change. It may take a lot of learning.

Hey guys, I think everyone has missed the point. Just like collision, the XML editor and numerous other features that you won't use, this really isn't the end of the world. If you don't like it then you don't use it, it's that simple. I recon the thinking of not having it in a seperate SDK file is to keep it simple ( KISS in all it's beauty ). This isn't an attempt of Microsoft taking over the world starting with Irrlicht, it is an oppotunity for people to use languages like BASIC and Java with Irrlicht as well as C#. There's been a few raging debates ( mostly stoked by me ) about the use of Java, now here's a time to prove it an everyone is pooh poohing it. You guys just ain't happy with nuffin, lol.

The last FIFA was alright, though it isn't a shade on Pro Evo. I still don't like the free kicks, but I do like chopping players down like a lumber jack and not getting sent off for it Totti always did annoy me.the FIFA series .. well no comments XD

Well, well...
I also not like Microsoft bearing.
I don't believe them.
With Aztica 3d engine, a has only problems with microsoft ATL and COM. Very errors, crashes...
But Niko knows well - with this support sure will be many irrlicht users.
Most importantly for me is the new Irrlicht 0.7 material system. Sounds very promising .

I think that it will just be a wrapper which could mean that you will never even see it as a Linux user. I think it will probably just be a DLL file which is bound to be small, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not going to effect you at all I think but it will be very good for people who would rather use other languages ( C# is popular with some people as well you know, is it right to alienate them? ). Overall a storm in a tea-cup methinks but we shall see when the next release comes out.
.net isnt entirely linux-only maybe...
depending on how the hookup to .net is done (can we still use opengl fron .net?) we may be able to still use the .net port/features in linux, via the open source re-implementations of .Net, the Mono project and dotGNU. The projects both have shown great progress (you can compile either c# or vb.net code in mono and run it in linux...) so it might all be for the best.
really you can't argue niko's intent on this i'd say, the capabilities of the .NET library are astounding, especially for their networking capability. advanced network features like the ones in RakNet are almost native in c# and .NET
I think this is a great idea, and i look forward to seeing what Niko does with it.
plus, honestly, if 10-15 mb is the limit of the download size for you, its time to think about broadband i'd say. not trying to offend anybody, but im sure we all agree dialup sux....
