Petition - Who wants Niko back developing Irrlicht?

Post by MasterGod »

I want to start a petition to get Niko back working on Irrlicht as it seems that even though he didn't officially abandoned it he still doesn't work on it.

Well, I would really like to see him back active.
I believe that not having Niko working as before on Irrlicht is a great loss.
To be honest, even though when I came you still weren't that active, I miss you.
I know you don't earn money by working on it, as of the other Irrlicht developers (who does a great job keeping it alive) but you have great ideas and excellent skills and having you back would help Irrlicht a lot.

What do you guys have to say about it :?:
Would you like to see him back too :?:

P.S
Hopefully if many answer the poll I'll send him a link to this thread and I hope it would make a change.

Edit:
To be clear, I don't ingratiating or something, I honestly want him back.

Abstain: sure, I'd like to, but we all need to pay the bills.

Having just tried irrKlang, I can see where his time has been going. It's very, very nice. I only wish that I had a commercial project so that I could funnel some money to him for it.

Also, hybrid, bitplane and luke are doing a bang-up job of pushing Irrlicht along. They work well together, so dropping Niko back into the mix might actually slow development down for a while.

They do but I fail to understand how adding Niko would slow down the development.

P.S
It shouldn't take more then a week for him to update himself with all the new stuff IMO

You, and every manager since the dawn of time. ;)

That's not really the issue. It's the impact of:

1. Factorial channels of communication. 3 channels to 6. Things are more likely to get missed (ironically, because you assume someone else will do it), done twice, reverted, and conflicted.

2. The impact on the three current devs when someone else sticks their oar in, no matter how competent or well intentioned they are.

It would be a net positive eventually, but a quick dip now and again might do more harm than good.

I also think than Niko should return to developing Irrlicht. Currently Irrlicht developing progress for new features is slow :( No Cubemaps support... Hardware Vertex Support... memory problems with clean mesh and textures etc...

I don't think Niko is entirely interested in adding support for those kinds of features, except for fixing the "memory problems" which I am not 100% which ones you are refering to.

Did everyone forget he is working on a Flex game? His focus is on that right now, which is coming close to release (Or already released I'm not sure), so I doubt he will have any time for Irrlicht in the coming months.

PS: Cubemaps are outdated, Carmack recommends a texture atlas.

Of course...BlindSide has used them in numerous demos of his own.

Actually just two :P, and yes they were achieved without any modification to Irrlicht or by using the exposed video data.

Well, sheesh, it is so darn hard to keep up on the numbers, given how many demos you have been churning out lately.

All i have to say is that presumably he left developing irrlicht for a reason, as he probably wanted to make money from his skills and he's left irrlicht in capable hands, so i doubt there's much chance of him coming back whilst he's still got things to do on his money making projects!

If he did come back then it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing i'm sure as he's the initial brains behind it all but i think it's clear that irrlicht is progressing along well without him.

I think he could earn money using irrlicht as well. he can actually usee irrlicht and irrklang (maybe irredit too) to build a game, instead of the current flash-based old-school-graphics 2D-MMO (omg it's mmo!) darkness spring. and at the same time he can add new features into the engine because i'm sure he will need some new features for his game. a good example is the Blender Foundation who use their own open-source software to make their animations and game. think about that.... niko!!

by the way i'm thinking of supporting his irrklang too by purchasing the license.... soon.
