IMHO Niko is still participating in the Irrlicht development. He is still the only one to work on the SF website, he prepares the releases, he's actively participating in email discussions of the dev team, and he also adds new stuff from time to time. However, as with all other dev team members, this work is only performed in the little amount of spare time that's left when all paid work-time, real-life demands, holidays, etc. are subtracted. And this does tend toward zero quite often.
I guess that once Niko makes some updates to irrEdit which require additional features in Irrlicht he'll implement them and add them to the engine. But as long as his requirements are met there's no way to postpone the paid work for some fun project. Also, IIRC, Niko just posted on his blog that he's also working on Irrlicht related projects.

Yes, BlindSide addons eg. Shadow Mapping and Virtual Cube Mapping demos are very good. I think than "the best" addons "mainly this with new features" should be adding on wiki with description for it, or on forums should be created new forum with addons, because in currently in Project Announcements are addons, demos, games etc. and it cause mess.

By the way, I hope none of this is taken as criticism of Niko or any of the devs. I have unqualified respect and admiration for all of you, and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the time you've put in.

instead of the current flash-based old-school-graphics 2D-MMO (omg it's mmo!) darkness spring
It won't be an MMO.

I hope my post was also not understood as assuming any kind of criticism in any of your posts. I just think that some people (even) here really seem to think that Niko voluntarily chose to stay away from Irrlicht programming. AFAIK this is not the case, and to me it seems unproper to assume something like this.

There is truth in what you say but what ever reasons there are, having him back would be great IMHO.
No one forces him/would say anything bad whatever he choses to do (regarding this issue) but seeing you and bitplane and the others able to do it gives me hope that Niko would find a way too and you can't blame me for hoping, right?
