Programmer's block

Post by RustyNail »

So. I now have a goal: Make Cube-Like game. Sound Easy? I've almost finished the UML diagrams... Almost ready to get back into Code::Blocks.
Then there were a few insane days that I almost didn't touch y computer.... First a ton of homework, then one of my teacher's concert...
So today I decided to start working on the project again... And I found out that I enjoyed NOT working on it. In fact I couldn't work on it at all... :(
So. What do I do now?

Oh, and not only that... I've recently stopped wanting to do anything else except playing computer games... And the weird thing is - On one hand, I WANT to do something other than playing computer games, but on the other hand.... It's just soo boring....
And this has been 'in effect' since about a week ago... Before then, the last time I touched my huge collection of computer games was... like a year ago....

You're doing this for a hobby, right?

Then only do it when you feel like it. Problem solved!

I've had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!! But the only way to get rid of wanting to play computer games (I play CS:S HL2 TF2) is to play them! I really wanted to start programming a FPS game like you.. but also just wanted to play games... So I followed what I wanted to do, after a while, the games just got repetitive. So I got motivated to start programming, and now I'm (albeit trying) to make a simple FPS game too (our stories are coincidentally similar!) That's my story

Oh and don't forget, you have to be motivated, without motivation, there is nothing driving you to do anything!

Edit/PS: Also, I find your signature hilarious

Motivated? I AM motivated... Partially. I have the whole games (or at least the rendering part) fully thought out... But it's just so boring typing all those line of code out...

 Ah, well... Still need to get better at playing Q3 than my programming teacher.... Where'd I put my Q3 disc?
I have much to learn...

I think you're motivated to play Q3, not type code.. two completely different things  Just play Q3 until you're better/bored with it... then start some coding. You don't have to code like 7 hours straight, you can do an hour or two a day

It took me about a week to get bored of CS:S again and start coding :?

:D My GeFroce2 is not capable of playing Q3 under WINE.... So.... Now I'm playing Cube!!!
 Always loved that game...

Heh. Well... I'm not coding - therefore questions about how to implement that 'super-mega-shot-though-wall gun' would be irrelevant... :)

And now, a question related to coding -
Could it be that my problem lies in trying to make my "game" 100% reusable?
... I've now created a reusable Win32 Window manager...
Working on the OpenGL Context creater...
Do you think that it would be easier to just do it the NeHe way, through several functions?

Can I lock you in my closet and make you do all the manual typing for me? :P

Hmmm ... I haven't posted here for quite a time because I also just can't get myself up and do some programming at home. I work as a software developer, but it's quite different than programming games (or trying to do so). My idea is to get a small game (really small) done, it would be somthing like a "5-hour-hack", and afterwards I hope that I can do some more.

BTW: I love playing BF1942 on a "Midway 24/7" server. I really got better in doing dogfights in the last few weeks, so I think I am now one of the best "regular players" when it comes to aerial combat. It's important to be there, the japanese navy needs my help :D

haha, that has happened to me too.
In fact you can maybe find some CASE tool to generate your code from the diagrams in UML you have. I have tried some in java and they are great, but you must know very well UML diagramming and if you really want something good and must know some constrain languages, like OCL or QTL for contracts (pre-post conditions) and domain model restriction.
As I always have said -and OMG is with me :P- coding is not programming and even more is not software develop. And with even more complicated and big programs, the abstraction level for developing is getting higher more and more. Games are the places where still working as a rule with c++ due to flexibility and performance, but I hope soon, this can be resolved.
Check for MDA and software factories from MS. And think about that projected to games!, that good be awesome!.

And play, play much!, Also I love playing, I love even more making games.

If I get such urges I hack my mind. I delete my video games and get back to DEVING! If anything playing games can demoralize you.
