Gang Wars: Online (Stress Test coming soon)(testers needed!)

Post by empirepro »

Team name: Empire Productions (non-registered)

Project name: Untitled Online Project

Brief description: I am currently working on a basic concept demo with basic features (in game chat, Movement, and so on) and until I have the working demo I am not releasing information on this project. The only thing I can say is that when it first launches it will be a group of 3d chat rooms in a city environment and then as development continues post release new features will be added that will take it from just 3d chat room to full game.

Target aim:
Still undecided on subscription model

Compensation:
Once launched we will take whatever is made from the game and put it toward keeping the game running once expenses are paid whatever is left will be divided up between team members.

Technology:
OS: Windows (cross Platform in the future)

Programming language: C++

Libraries:
Irrlicht - Video rendering
Irrklang - Audio
Raknet - Networking
Newton - Physics

Tools:
Irredit - Editor
3ds Max - 3d Modeling
Blender - 3d Modeling
Texturing - Paint, Photoshop, Any other program that would work.

This section will be updated as we nail down our design and find out exactly what is needed!

Talent needed:
We are currently looking for our core group members (those who will be our leaders in each department)

Please note: This is a serious project! We are looking for dedicated people only. If you are not willing to spend atleast an hour a day working on your assignment then please do not waste your time or our time!

Lead Programmer
Lead 3d model artist
Lead Network coder

Team structure:
Right now its only me. I am a floater. I am able to do some of everything. I am a motivated worker who is willing to go and learn anything I need to learn to get the job done to the highest quality possible. I love working with computers and most of all I love to be able to visualize a new world, create it, and be able to walk around and live in that new world I created. My passion is MMORPGs and community building in games.

Website:
None at this time!

Contacts:
deadmanheat@yahoo.com

Previous Work by Team:
None this is a new team

Additional Info:
None at this time! A demo will be posted with in the next couple weeks!

Feedback:
Any!

Also here is the link to a small demo I made. Currently it only consists of 2 city blocks with almost no buildings. For some reason its running really slowly on my PC and I would like some people to test it out and let me know how its running on their PC and give me some suggestions on how to make it run faster! Thanks!

I am still working on the networking side of things. I really wasn't ready to release any demo tonight however I was running into a problem with it running really slow and I wanted to see if it was the game or my computer. It turned out that the code I was using for my GUI was slowing it way down for me for some reason so I took that code out and now its running at around 60-70 FPS. I will release some source code samples of the networking once I have it coded and working.

Call this an experiment if you will. What happens when you place a bunch of strangers into a virtual world with no rules, no morals, and almost no limits? As the citizens of this virtual world the city, its government, and its economy are in your hands. Kill for a living, mine gold to create money, barter, sell your soul to the local gang, the choice is yours! Your options are only limited by the selection of skills that are available for you to learn. Quests are no longer limited to kill X number of rats but are now player created and the selection of quests will never be the same at any one time! Would you rather stay away from fighting? Well then every great city needs to have those people who sell them land! Join the realty guild and get discounts on land then turn around and sell the land for a profit. Or is politics more your style? Learn the political climate of the city and run for governor or start your own city and be the mayor better have people you can trust though taking care of the military side of protecting your city cause I hear that the black market has some big city destroying weapons for sale! However in the end what you are, what you do, and what you are known for is up to you and you alone!

We will be releasing our first demo for Gang Wars: Online (title pending) around Monday but before that we want to do a stress test of our server. So the first 50 people to message me will get into the stress test! We are hoping to have the stress test around the start of the weekend but once we have an official date it will be posted here!

Not to many people on this forum was interested in this project and I have made a design change. This project is no longer a Irrlicht project I have switch over to Ogre for a number of reasons. If the Mods want to delete this thread then that is fine! Thanks to those who did make comments about this project.

Hmm, I sense a bit of resentment. If it is for the fact that no one is interested, then I would like to say it is probably because not much was offered to be interested in. I will admit, I browsed this topic everytime it came up in the search, and I have seen it on DevMaster, and was paying attention, but nothing really that I could comment on. You can't expect 50 people to throw themselves at you when nothing has been shown as of yet, as far as I know.

A proven method would be:
#1 - provide some very intriguing screenshots, or gameplay descriptions of what has been implemented.
#2 - not using a GameDev template to post on another forum.
#3 - Less exclamation points. :D

Yeah to be fair i thought it was rather strange that stress tests and betas were being mentioned when there weren't any screenshots showing what the game was like... most people throw screenshots in their project threads as soon as they possibly can, well before a playable version would ever be ready!

Obviously your choice to change to ogre is your own choice, though it would be interesting to hear why... was irrlicht limiting you in some way? Presumably it wasn't due to a lack of interest... that would be a fairly bad reason to change to a different engine i reckon

Yes the choice had nothing to do with the lack of interest. Irrlicht is a great graphics engine and the people on here are great as well for the most part. We just talked as a team and decided that Ogre would be better for the type of Graphics we wanted for the game. I was kind of not sure I wanted to make the change since development had already started and I was already use to Irrlicht. We talked about making the code so we could easily change to Ogre at a later date if we decided to but I felt it would be better to just make the change now and go with one graphics render right from the start rather then change to a new one half way through development.

As for the demo. It was only going to be that a Demo nothing more. We are no where near beta release yet. We wanted to put something out there that people could see to try and get more help in the full development of the game. The test was just going to be our first test to see what the server could do and to make sure all the bugs were out of it. Both the test and the release of the demo are bing push back until further notice so we can work on creating the best demo possible.

Granted i don't have any real experience with Ogre but as far as i've gathered from observing discussions about it it's no better than irrlicht for graphics... They're both just renderers and you can achieve exactly the same looking results in both engines as it's mostly reliant on how good your artists are at making the models and textures etc.
