It can possible for import maya format[mb/ma] directly to UU or milkshape but we have a little condition for atist. When he make a model in maya. If artist use a hard technique for animation eg. hair system or other bind pose technique both UU and milkshape not support (program will closed) :-(. Conclusion if u need directly import maya format tell your artist use a simple technique. ;-)

well, that's a need anyway. You can certainly not port human hair and even full quality of a 3d package to a game...yet...not that I know. In general, game formats and game engines, do support a limited amount of features.

So is not just an specific tool/exporter/engine rule, is a general rule for a game artist.

Some engines limit you in 3 bones influence per vertex as much, and I modded for some with just rigid 1.0/0.0 influence only (hl 1). And worse.

If he comes for hi res, I understand the situation, but is shorter route for a hi res guy to get up to speed with the several optimization rules, than have a low pol person, be able to do hi res tuff when needed (normal maps).Imo.
Finally making games again!
