Impostors ?

Post by Steel Style »

Hi any of you ever tried to implement impostors ? I have found an article from gamasutra called "Dynamic 2d Imposters" but don't very get the thing since I don't really get the explanation since I'm not really DX friendly.

Yeah thanks but If I remember well he never finished it and so he never release his sources.
So I have a little question does RTT allow to render a small part of the screen only ?

You can use the setViewPort method to constrain the rendering operations to a small part of the screen, so it should be the same with RTTs

he never shared. bitplane stopped sharing sometime after his cloud scenenode and when I asked about it he told me using his code would get me sued. I was like WHAT?! I thought he released that for everyone!

I don't think he realised exactly what I was saying at the time but what I do know is I had him on msn for a year when he finally decided to lose touch with the world and remained on away for months only to never be seen again.

Last I knew he was busy with work. I'd poop a golden brick if he responded to this thread within a week. quick one of you weirdos give him a call to fulfill your need to be useful once in your life.

Perhaps he's working for a company that has contractual rights to code he writes.

Oh, and dibs on the golden brick.

Not likely he's a load tester he doesn't normally write code for work.

so he is gone on your msn also?

until now I actually thought it might have been just me. now I'm starting to worry about the guy. I sure hope he is working or making babies or something. I hate to think something may have happened to him.

Maybe he switched to ogre and he is too embarrassed to tell anyone.

Actually my impostor thingy is kinda working I say kinda cause he need lot of improvement. Actually I have some model far away in my scene and I should put them in a texture using RTT but the only method I found is create a 2nd camera wich is nearest but doing this the perspective is not the same any clue ?

In bitplanes imposters you could notice that also. I think the trick to fool the eye is to have it actually in your game scene. distract it from the main focus of the eye.

Obviously you're going to want to orient it as best you can. the direction of the player camera if you aren't already. I don't think this can be avoided entirely using rtt. Why rtt anyway? why not take a picture and display a billboard? you could even make a model tool that generates them per model.

Or you could play with the fisheye of the camera. perhaps adjust the cameras focus settings to reach some desired effect. I really haven't a phucking clue. Good Luck!

We're programmers. Programmers are, in their hearts, architects, and the first thing they want to do when they get to a site is to bulldoze the place flat and build something grand. We're not excited by renovation:tinkering, improving, planting flower beds.
