I wont be entering on principle.
"you bunch submit game art, we'll keep it and give one of you peanuts".
I see these all the time on artists communities, and i dont think its cool (though thats my opinion) and i agree with virion.
Edited cos the previous post i made was unnecessary

I might enter sarcastically, with a guy on an electric skateboard (to minimize walkcycle effort).FuzzYspo0N wrote:I wont be entering on principle.

I'm not a good animator anyway.
Is the somber dream of the Grim Reaper a shade Darker Than Black?

Ok, what prizes do you think are fair in your opinion?
I think you're not right, since, if i gave the complete price on the market,
i'd give it only to the first placed competitor, but i would still not get what
i want exactly, in that case i'd go to a pro and ask him for a price and want
him to do exactly what i need, or no money payed.
So in this case i pay the 50$, and get nothing near the thing i really need,
which i really need, but never mind, forget about this contest, maybe there'll
be another with much more fair prizes and less requirements/conditions.
The offer i gave is in my capabilities since we in Serbia have 200$ salaries,
and it's considered lucky, so it's sort of like someone from usa offered 500$.

As bitplane said, it's ok if you keep the proper licenses. I guess you want to use the meshes, so you should add that to your conditions. But if you leave the rest of the rights with the creator, I guess the money is at a fair rate. Though this doesn't necessarily mean that you will get enough contestants.

Ok, perhaps the context is taken differently as a programmer and not as an artist. The 3 people objecting so far (i know personally) are artists - and would not see the principle of the competition as being "hey, i can make some art", rather , "hey this guy is just looking for artists to spend time for almost no money".
Thats all thats misconstrued
If you look on artist websites often the competitions have no prizes, and they still get a number of entries, but their intention is never "hey you make us stuff for nothing" , but rather " hey see what you can make with this topic, as a personal gain".
If that makes more sense, i have no real gain from entering, and art is not a half an hour ordeal. A character such as the one portrayed should take no less than 3 days of constant work. For 20 USD, that i probably cant accept due to my country/country banking issues.
I hope that clears things up, maybe i just read it out of context and as an artist, the time spent is a lot for something like this. Thats not to say dont enter though - go mad!
EDIT: Plus , id note that it includes weapon modelling, full animation and rigging as well as a working example in irrlicht?? Its a load of work thats all

Well, you're right, sometimes i, as a programmer would take part in a
competition like this one, for no money, if i have time, and inspiration.
But i guess that programmers are taken for granted on this forum, and if
you ask artist/modeller to do something he'll complain that he needs a lot
of time for that and ask for 100$ as a fair price.
Ok, the contest is off, i don't care, there are fully rigged models all round
internet, a bit of practise for non-pros would be nice with 20$ on their mind
as still something that's being payed for their will to learn.
So basically, what i'm trying to say, i can find ppl in my city who'll do a good work on this for 60-70$ and i get to bitch all the time, i don't
like this, i don't like that, i want it improved or no money at all, and i'll
get ALL the animations i want, not just a couple of them.
This way i offer 50$ and got bitched around for that, but in one way i can
understand, you don't wanna be used, but if you get payed (not much)
for practicing and learning, i think it's just a bit constructive, as much as
i can make it.
And, i don't wannna lose any more time on this, i'm gonna do something
creative for no money, and i'll be happy i made it.
P.S. Peace..

I hope you didnt take anything we said to harshly. I was merely explaining the context in which the comments in the thread were being made from, SO THAT you dont feel bad for posting it. I think the competition should still happen, i just dont think that i or the other artist types from this forum that i know have the time to spend on that.
My aim was to clear up any bad vibes created by the posts, and rather put forward that it was because we spoke from a different context.
Apologies if it came across differently, i was actually trying to help

how to hi-jack a thread properly
I take this as an opportunity to make games with a big S.
