Keepers

Post by neilb »

I thought I'd enter the Gizmo For You Ares competition with a game titled "Keepers".

The game is set in a Transylvania style land, dotted with castles, each of which house a servant. All the masters are away, and the servants, out of fear of each other and their respective masters, begin to launch strikes against one another using various weapons they buy at auction or find scattered around the castle.

It's basically a hybrid of a platformer and Scorched Earth, focusing on 2D for the Ares. I hacked together a protoype over the last week which I've dutifully recorded and youtubed. The graphics are placeholders, so no complaints!

A video of the prototype

My blog has more detail, as does the official Gizmo For You discussion.

In case you were wondering, there's no way that the Zombie Simulator would run on a PSP let alone a GPU-less Ares, so I'm not even going to try, and besides with the amount of work left to do, I wouldn't get it finished in time

For now the Zombie Simulator will be resting in peace.

I've rendered the first model, the Great Hall, and created the player's character. I've designed the game to be simple so that I don't have to create a lot of graphics, because the deadline is only five weeks away...

We're programmers. Programmers are, in their hearts, architects, and the first thing they want to do when they get to a site is to bulldoze the place flat and build something grand. We're not excited by renovation:tinkering, improving, planting flower beds.

Heh I ported an OpenGL zombie simulator to the PSP, it ran 'decent' just I never got around to clipping the town so some floors and buildings were missing their roofs.

Here's a nice blurry video after I replaced the placeholder graphics of the demo I submitted to Gizmo For You, on the Great Hall screen.

A nice blurry video

The character is rigged, but not animated yet so I just rendered a static image facing each direction. I've also split the scene up so that the character is behind the foreground when he's on the top level.

@Sudi, I have to write it for the Ares first, so I'll focus on that for now.

@SG57, My Zombie Simulator struggled in places on a decent dual-core desktop PC, after optimising, and I hadn't even got to the zombie bit yet!

Here's some more graphics, first up the title screen/backdrop screen. It still needs texturing, but you get the idea :D

And a bonus screen shot of the character in the Great Hall. This is from the blurry video I posted the other day, so I thought I'd post a clean shot at the actual resolution of the Ares (480 x 272).

Well, that's it. I've quit the competition. I've sent a message to those in charge and I'm just waiting for them to remove me from the list. The problem is that the contest is to be decided by a poll that is trivial to rig, leaving me with no choice but to withdraw.

I wish the Gizmo guys the best of luck in the future.

I'll simply re-render my graphics at a higher resolution and focus on the desktop.

I will finish this if it's the last thing I do!!!

It's back on again

The Gizmo guys addressed my issues, including resetting the polls and only registered users can vote now, so it's fair for all entrants.

Thanks guys :D
