Program for creating sound effects/background music

Post by shadowslair »

Hi!

Soon or later I`ll need to find some program for composing music from absolute zero to something useful for a game, so if someone has some experience or heard about such a program- no matter free or paid please post your recommendation/experience/advice here. Thanks!

well far as making music, you would use a DAW (digital audio workstation). I will give you the only two you need to know (IMO)

http://lmms.sourceforge.net/ (free, get if you cant afford the next one)
http://flstudio.image-line.com/ (pay)

I've used the trial, and its on my list of things to buy when I start doing some more serious work (which isnt right now). but two things in particular make it stand out to me over any other pay product:

1) the free lifetime upgrades

2) the fact that they're a cool enough company to acknowledge the great stuff their userbase does (the power users section and the whole section in their press logos area dedicated to the fanart created by the fanbase covering the personified FL-chan)

If you're fine with midi music, you might look up Anvil Studio. It's an excellent free tool for midi creation.

If you need a program for modifying your sound effects: Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

and if you need a full-blown music creation thing I recommen Reaper: http://www.reaper.fm/

It has (almost) all the features that the "big" sequencers like Cubase and Logic have, it's way cheaper and is updated quite often.

As a hobby musician I switched from an old Cubase version (VST 5.0) to Reaper a few months ago as my new computer has no paralell port for the old dongle, and I'm happy. Reaper even has the killer-feature that I require (Midi Time Code support to sync an external HD-Recorder I use for some live recordings) but is only available in Cubase Studio and up (which costs about 400 EUR, 200 on eBay - I paid 50 EUR for Reaper).

Decided to use FL studio. Feeding all my needs. I`m not a musician, but will start covering some basic tutorials. Will need to get used to it to be able to create something useful when have some time.

Game designer, 3d & 2d artist, programmer, photographer, musician... Lol!

Thank you all, guys! Helpful as always!

i recently found a little tool called 'sfxr' that will generate the kind of bleeps and blops we're used to from old arcade-style games. Could be useful for testing, or even for production depending on the style of game you want to make.

if you're looking for me, start looking on irc, i'm probably there.

That's nice. I guess I'll try that thing out, I still need some sound effects like bleeps and blops.
