How are stored the lightmaps in the Quake III maps?

The question is simply that. How are stored the lightmaps inside a Quake III BSP? Is a single, large map, or are small ones, or even, maybe it is one per polygon?

It's a fixed texture size of 128'128 multiple light maps are stored in one file but the uvmapping is weird, a single lightmap can have polygons from all over the level allocated to it

If you want modern rendering techniques learn how to make them or go to the engine next door =p
