USA, WW2 history, politics and 'Pics of where I live' contest
Hello!
I think to visit my uncle in USA in coming vacation (2011).
He lives somewhere under Chicago.
I am planning just to meet USA "from inside", but also, maybe I find work here and stay longer?
What can you tell me, an European, about USA?
What is the job market (who is needed to work, ofc in IT), how to live in USA.
Everything that I should now before come to USA.
Thanks in advance

What an awesome message!
Do you have some more information about those jobs? It's something more like programming mobile devices, webdev, business software, something else?
I want to make some certifications and skill myself for those jobs.
If you have still this newspaper, it would be great if you can make me photo or scan of those jobs section, if you can.
Also, one more question. How about education?
In Poland, there is more important your real skills, portfolio than schools you finished (in IT companies).
I am not finished studies yet, it will be problem in USA?

There is a link to the article, it was on October 17th so not too long ago. You can look at http://www.suntimes.com/index.html or http://www.chicagotribune.com/ for job positions in chicago, there should be a link to job availability. Companies usually prefer a degree though if you have a lot of experience and a good portfolio with your resume then it isn't super important but it does help. They may also choose to help you get a degree.

Re: USA
I'm afraid that's not the way it works.aek wrote:maybe I find work there and stay longer?

There's a rather strict legal system regarding immigration and work permits in the US nowadays, which you should get acquainted with at first.
Never take advice from someone who likes to give advice, so take my advice and don't take it.
Thank you a lot Insomniacp!
Bate, thank you. For now I thought only about only non-immigrant VISA, I am planning for now only to stay max 1-2 months.
I know there is many problems about coming and living in USA (and even more problems after those terrorists attacks).
I am not sure now about working in USA with only non-immigrant VISA, but I'll read more about this. Thanks for this information!
I will try as hard as I can. USA is country of my dreams

No way! That's where I live.I think to visit my uncle in USA in coming vacation (2011).

Unfortunately in the US most companies won't hire you unless you have a degree. As for programming jobs, unless you are willing to travel to Chicago everyday, there is pretty much nothing. In Poland, there is more important your real skills, portfolio than schools you finished (in IT companies).

Hmm, ok. So I have new plans: I'll finish my studies, extend portfolio and skills. For now I will work here, in Poland.Adler1337 wrote:Unfortunately in the US most companies won't hire you unless you have a degree. Anyway, I will come to USA in this vacation, I really want to see this beautiful country
It's super!Adler1337 wrote:No way! That's where I live.I think to visit my uncle in USA in coming vacation (2011).

Will you show me Chicago? Please? Please?
I do not see in my expectations USA as American Dream, but only as a beautiful country. A country full of opportunities.Bate wrote:Be prepared for poverty and misery as well. Also, I need to run from Poland. Is VERY WEIRD country.
Politicians are mad (you probably know that from news).
Check this:

And there is much more, but not in English language (maybe it's better for Poland).
Look also for technology. USA is technology giant. Poland even can't launch satellites to Earth orbit.
I am not just like USA, because it's technology giant and land of opportunities. I like USA because it have great history, great people.
Live in USA is different.
I am sad of Poland. Don't want live and die here.

i think its normal to have people who don't like their country. if you come to my country and do a survey, you will find more than 50% of the citizen are unhappy with the politics (very racist and corrupted from top to bottom) here. maybe poland is better. ;b

It`s rather strange to hear that. Well, Poland was found in um.. 960? And America was not even discovered until 1492...aek wrote:I like USA because it have great history, great people. Live in USA is different. I am sad of Poland. Don't want live and die here.
I`m sure each country is unique and beautiful, with great history and great men and women striving for good. Just wanna say that it`s a common practice to dislike the thing you have and want the one you don`t have, but kinda sounds ugly.
I`m not fully in love in my country ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgaria ) too, it`s small and poor, realize there are tons of disadvantages and things to be improved, but I still like it the way it is, realize it could`ve been much worse and I`m absolutely sure there are still also many advantages living here, many opportunities. Plus, programming is something you can work everywhere and send your work to your employee or sell it. Remember that you can live everywhere, but there`ll be one, and only one place you`ll feel at home...

I myself don't really care about the place i am, but about the people that are around me.
But, yeah, all the countries that were in Soviet union are not doing very good. Look at Slovakia. Between 1. and 2. World War, when we were together with Czech republic, the country was richer then Austria.
