Irrlicht on Sega Dreamcast... has anyone done or seen this?
The worst of Dreamcast is that it didn't get T&L hardware, so the 200Mhz is quite a limitation. Other than that, it had a better sound processing unit than PS2, a Yamaha customized chip with 64 channels of sound, and double of Video Ram for instance, but half of the main memory. It was quite a machine. Too bad Sega left it so unprotected.

Small Step for Irrlicht Dreamcast port
I have part of the Irrlicht Engine running on the Dreamcast My next step will be to get the Irrlicht file system ported over and then the video driver.
I am not sure if anyone (other then me) is really interested in this port? I am basically doing this for myself for a number of reasons and decided to post here about it in case others are interested?
Thanks,
dcoder

Wow, 5 1/2 years ago this post started. Lol. I think you're right, the Dreamcast won't die, they made a martyr out of it! Anyway, for anyone working on the DC these days, don't overlook Heinrich Tillack's work on his Holly3D engine. He released the source for it as part of a game he made for the Dreamcast (DCastle). Apparently he did testing on PC using Irrlicht too, so it may put you way ahead of the game if you're looking for a place to start. I read he also did some SH4 assembly optimizations as well, so that may provide some gains if you can re-use, integrate, or further optimize what he did.

I've always wondered what we would have seen on the DC if it had survived as long as the PS2 has, with more modern 3D/game engines. Poor thing. So far ahead of its time.

Thanks for your input fmx. Mild curiosity is one of the reasons I am porting Irrlicht. I am curious as to how well Dreamcast can support a modern 3D engine?
Also thanks to pheadbaq for the links. The first link actually worked and I now have what I believe is the latest version of KGL-X which should prove very helpful. I was having a hard time finding a good link for a recent version.
Progress on the port continues and things look pretty good thus far. However there is quite a bit of work to do as one might expect. This is going to take some time, but I am dedicated to the project.

Looking forward to seeing what comes of all this!

... hmmm, nevermind the link in that last post, it leads nowhere since the link it gives you now goes to another web site. These should take you to the DC Dev Code::Blocks pack
http://dcemulation.org/?title=CodeBlocks_DC_Dev
http://dchelp.dcemulation.org/downloads ... Dev_R2.exe
He also has an ISO download with a general toolset in case you want to take other routes for developing on the DC:
http://dcemulation.org/?title=DC_Dev_ISO
And a guide to getting Dev-C++ to jump through some DC hoops:

Ok, I think that's all I got, heh heh. I think this thread could actually make a pretty good DC-dev landing page now
