there is no free VB compiler out there - and iut'd be pretty useless as its designed to work around the IDE (unlike C++ which is much more text-file orientated).
However. unless you fancy nipping off to ebay for an old vb6 copy, you could write vbscript in windows - check out the script centre and the scriptomatic tool whcih might get you going. Don't expect it to be a windows-executable maker, but it might work for your 'job'.

Microsoft Express Beta IDE for Free!
Well, I actually was looking for a compiler to exe, but anyway, thank you very much
I have found Envelop, which is for a very old version, Visual basic 3.
Oh, and yes , I indeed already can use it without the ide. The job I had to make I made it with an imposed need of not using nor even a single control, I generated dinamically(by code) a pair that a I needed, but I mainly did it all with the language. Was just an small data base , its field and that, a bit of parsing. very basic stuff.
Mono is free but if for vb.net, and besides I sure get lost in other thing different than VB6, is that i am not searching for something that requires more files than the exe download...Reason why I also looked at cxfreeze or something like that, a thing to allow compiling python files to exe...too complex for me.
There's other things like Wxbasic, but I prefer if I learn a more standard language, mainly VB, c++ or python. But c or c++ are sure too complex for an artist.
