CopperCube vs IrrEdit
Im really confused as to the differences between the two, or if they are even separate things. I understand that copperCube depends upon irrEdit but the downloads page is the same for both, irrEdit's last stand alone release being 1.5 and copperCube 2 listed as irrEdit's latest release. Are they the same thing or what is the difference?
I think that instead of releasing more updated versions of IrrEdit, they released it under the name Coppercube, I dont see much difference between the two programs. (although im sure someone can probably correct me on that)
I found that using IrrEdit I could not load any .irr scene files into my game, possibly because of compatibility issues between the latest version of Irrlicht and the older version of IrrEdit? Im not sure if this is the case but no matter what I did the scene would not load unless I exported with Coppercube.
Although it says you only have a 14 day trial when using Coppercube, even when the trial is over you can still export .irr files, so I just use that.

You cant import .irr files, so editing your level is abit long, but what I do is put the level together in coppercube, importing 3ds files etc. Then when I export the level, I also save a coppercube version of it, so that if I want to edit the level I can just open the coppercube version, edit that and export it as .irr again.

Meshes should look the same if you export them correctly, tough AFAIK materials may not look the same, for example, you won't see any shader materials that were applied in maya(like bump maps, etc).torchLight wrote:Ok, one more question, I have maya, so will building levels in that and exporting to obj give me similar results?
Working on game: Marrbles (Currently stopped).
I think one big difference (a showblocker for me) is that IrrEdit supports plugins and CopperCube doesn't. I'm using a lot of plugins for level editing, so that's an important issue for me.

does irredit 1.5 work with the latest Irrlicht, and will it continue to as its not in production anymore?
Also, this is really quite noobish, anyone have any tutorials on getting a world space up and running? I'm trying to start a game set in space with a setting in the vein of sins of a solar empire. All the games Ive made so far, small arcade games, have worked with screen positioning. Its made life very simple. Now I'm lost as to how to get a map set up. Simply, any good tutorials or books on setting up a general large environment, and working with it? Bonus points if you know one about setting up a space environment.

I never experienced any trouble loading IrrEdit 1.5 files with Irrlicht 1.7 projects. I think the only reason why an IrrEdit 1.5 was released is that the heighmaps got flipped with a change in Irrlicht 1.5, so that the maps created with IrrEdit 1.4 wouldn't look the same.
