irrPlanet

Post by kazymjir »

I planned to made this as surprise for community,
but I think it's better to consult with you to get better end-result :)

So, irrPlanet is (will be) Irrlicht community webpage, created by Irrlicht users.
It will contain most stuff like on forum, like projects, tutorials or code snippets, but in other form.

On irrPlanet all this information will be more organized, lets say,
detailed project page will look like this:
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/7020 ... shot3p.png
Only most important information, and link to Irrlicht forum topic about project, where will be all information, like dev stuff, comments from users, etc.

I think about what categories should be on irrPlanet webpage.
For now I am wondering about some categories like "code snippets" which
should be on forum imo, in forum style, not formatted to 'description', etc.

So, there is current sections:

# news
All news related to irrPlanet. Changes, added features, etc.
Weekly, or once for three days (depend on user activity) will be posted recent changes on site content, like added projects or screenshots.

# Aggregator
It will receive all entries from community blogs with tag 'Irrlicht'.
I think it's nice idea to read stuffs that users are writing about Irrlicht.

# Projects
List of projects made with Irrlicht. Detailed page will look like this:
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/7020 ... shot3p.png
It will be only information page, if reader will be interested, there will be link to Irrlicht forum topic about project.

# Screens and videos
Just screenshots and videos of projects based on Irrlicht.

# Tutorials
List of tutorials to Irrlicht, Gimp and other related stuff, needed in game development.
It can be list of URLs to exterior pages and our forum topics.

# External tools
List of external tools to use with Irrlicht, like map editors, 3d modeling stuff, etc.

What do you think?
What to change, what to remove, what to add?

And most important question:
do you want site like this? :)

I'll move this to Open Discussion first, as it's not a project in the original sense. No answers to any of your questions yet from me, though.

Ok, thanks for moving.

It looks nice. If it doesn't work, at least, you wouldn't feel like you never tried. I'd say Go ahead :)

Thanks Mel.
I am sure it will work technically, I have made skeleton of application and all I need is just to add categories which I was talking about.
But I wonder if anyone will be using this. I don't want to spent time on project which nobody will be using.
Doing projects that nobody will use is good when you are learning new language, for gaining experience, but I have 3 years of experience in webdev, this project is too small project to gain experience :)

I'd probably use it. Looks like a good idea to me. :)

Ok :)

I would ask you for opinion about categories about I wrote in first post.
Which categories remove, what add?
I need some feedback, because I am coding it for you - Irrlicht Community :)

The only thing i can think of is to make it possible to vote for projects :) And then, perhaps, make available for the user to order projects based on how many votes did they get, so one can easily find the best projects.

Interesting idea.
But how about other categories?

Hmmm, I do not see too much interest in the project.
I am closing it.

You don't have to close it, you've got some nice mockups and good ideas.

My 2 cents:

I'd focus on community aspects. Voting and reviewing irrlicht projects would be great. There's no community driven irrlicht portal with thumbnails, voting and discussion on downloadable projects.

Also the aggregator with blogs is a good idea too. I recently started blogging about some irrlicht topics and the only traffic I get is through google searches. I'd take a look at this, it's pretty interesting.

I would be lazy and just hotlink tutorials, news, tools and screens and videos. The forum + main irrlicht site does a pretty good job of this and there's no need to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes a too many features takes focus away from the goal. You wouldn't buy a hammer with laser sighting and a cup holder.
