Let's Stick it in the Toaster- Playable Zombie survival FPS

Post by Thelollertruck »

A buddy and I worked on this project for shits n giggles last year in high school, and I was bored today and realized that I never posted it here, so here I am. This game is the culmination of about six weeks of work, so don't expect anything too fancy. The goal here was to create something like the Boxhead game but in first person, and then try to enter it in a game competition as a "Disaster Response" genre. The judges weren't too pleased with the game, but a few of them did love the beautiful soundtrack. Anyway, if you want to waste a few minutes blasting away zombies with an expansive array of terribly modeled weapons, here's the link to the release folder- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8HQBW4G3

The .exes are hidden amongst all of the crap in this folder, Toaster_no_starting_guns is the game as it's meant to be played, and Toaster_with_unlocks gives you all the guns to play around with in the beginning. Since it isn't explained anywhere else, right click cycles through weapons, middle click blows up the dynamite packs, pressing E completes objectives marked by the big arrow in the sky. The object is to go around and collect stuff to build a helicopter with. Oh, and alt+f4 quits. ^^

You made this in only 6 weeks!? Wow! I like the touch you added to the robot as they light the ground (in red) when they move. The game is really slow (look like 20 fps here) but your level is really huge! What have you used for the robot AI? they followed me inside the houses! :D So it look like they have some kind of pathfinding.

Considering that you were at high school with your friend, I don't understand why the judges did not liked it?!

Is the music you used is using a creative commons license? it sounded great. Did you still have the source? With a little work, you could optimize it so it run faster, (There is the mesh combiner here you could use and that would surely increase the FPS)

The judges didn't like it because they didn't consider it a good fit for "Disaster Response." The event was sponsored by the Red Cross, they were looking more for a game where you put out fires or something retarded like that. Also because we're so boss, we wrote the entire thing in one file, which the judges also did not like. The zombies actually don't use any pathfinding, they just use a flocking algorithm we wrote to align themselves with eachother and then head towards the player. All of the music was composed and performed by our friend Dan on his awesome keyboard and guitar, I suppose he wouldn't mind if you wanted to use it. I do still have the source, but I doubt I'll do any work on it, as I'm about to start college and I registered for 20 credits my first quarter. but yeah, thanks for the feedback ^^

The Red Cross is gonna regret being harsh on your game when they have to deal with zombies.
