I wrote a patch that manages which passes are drawn with a parameter to smgr->drawAll(). The patch is here:

No, this patch will be considered once a developer from the core team has time to do so. If you are in desperate need for this to get into the engine, please get in contact with one of us so we can send you our bank account number. Otherwise, we need to get money for the living from our day jobs first, after that we can think about doing other things for fun. If you have technologies which remedies the necessity of food consumption for human beings, we might also be interested in general. Otherwise, just stay calm and keep the things within their original threads.
