.X model resources

Post by keless »

Its probably going to be the new standard model format for IrrLicht, so if you have any valid models that work well with IrrLicht 0.5, please post links to them here for everyone to be able to use.

I just use a 3rd party .X exporter and it works just as well! :P

I think it is called Panda's X Exporter or something. Google it ;)

There's also this good free 3d editor that exports to .X format: http://www.delgine.com/

This one export directx 5 or 7 files. Only static. As also, metasequoia is a (outstanding) free modeller, it only models, and help a lot in uvmapping an 3d paint. Two features that the VERY few users I have found, do not notice...BTW, can't see the point of using x for loading static meshes, there's many other formats Niko added which are more "converter-supported".

The LE version is the only one to export formats.

This -character fx- one is the one I tipically use to make my game animations. I cry for a joint pinning and ik.(I want to do very accurate animations. I can do with Max, but now not in a company) Who knows, it can come in 1.4 version, but it will maybe be not any time soon...Though, the version I purchased does the job. It's not hard to learn. And it has not an overloaded UI. besides, it also exports md2.

the Panda Exporter, seems is ready to go, and seems works with max4, 5, and 6. It does support animation, and I think has some added features that the MS one does not have. An you don't have to compile anything.

This one, is great and free, but yet a bit hard to learn. A directx8 export is in the works by a user.(and since very lately, you also have with it an md2 exporter.)
blender.org

next onee is in which stuff is more hopeless in terms of a directx8 export, as I see no one working on it(though I heard it has a very easy scripting system for exports)...As I said before. Anyone feel free to add a script for it ;) It's open source and quite good already and improves quickly...One very big advantage is that in character animation, has some important features better than even Character Fx.
http://aoi.sourceforge.net

There are some more that need some better test on my part to recomend them...

OT: yay, Niko!! You're supporting spline interpolation!!! That makes directx animations flow way more smooth....

so..then you ended the directx addition? :) Wonderful
or I suppose there still is some stuff to polish, as I read you saying you are on it on other thread. Many congrats, however :) :)

Well, Irllitch is gonna be able to display state of the art animations...An animator dream... :) :)

damn, reading the features list, makes me wish I could code two lines in whatever the language... And that i could have the time for it...my efforts are all for a personal problem to solve...till june. (no, not a young student, how I wish I were ;) ) At that time, if all went ok, I could convert my self in a free directx models and animations expending machine... ;)

Irlitch engine tech demos/samples, and Irrlitchrpg ...two things that I think that I would specially like to collaborate with, and I can't help now...heck.

wow, reading it fully...it supports even psd format..!

Already mentioned on another thread but this level editor exports to .x files, and makes lightmaps for it too - though its £40 and I couldnt get their sample level to load in irrlicht :(

light map maker is a good tool for lightmap baking but unfortunately i can load either the model with base (diffuse) textures or with lightmap (not both) and their support doesnt respond. It is 35 $ but I dont want to pay until I am sure it can be done in the full version. But it is really great. May want to check this out^

ultimate unwrap does export import directx8 character animations. Allows to uv map them. Imports quake3 bsps.

For the lightmap generation, two tools for free before you buy anything :

- Lume Tools .free for non comercial projects. I think it does not do radiosity, but result is nice. I think code is provided.GNU, I think
http://www.dxlab.tk/

- fsrad. radiosity. They gave in latest vebrsion (004) an ase import. Ultimate Unwrap and Max can export as ASE. So, the thing here is the software itself sudivide the model to get better radiosiy result. Well, if what you output is a tga, as always in lightmap, to be loaded in channel2 in engine, then , heck, does not matte rwhat he does to the imported mesh. This one is free for comercial. I have seen shots and they have very good quality.
Something they say you'd better adapt it to your engine for better integration or something.

ultimate unwrap (35 $, imho much better purchase than cartography, or a tool that only lightmaps or level edit. While with Wings+Lm tools or Fs Rad+Character Fx(15$)+Ultimate unwrap(35$), you have it all and more) does all what i told about conversions, mapping, etc, but also supports 2nd channel of mapping, and a lightmap channel(mayb it's the same?), plus previewing in real time bumps, reflections.

I never tried to combine it with a tga lightamp generated with LM Tools or Fs rad that i post above..if some is succesful, tell here please... :)
