I quit my job today for irrlicht
Hello
I work for a company as Radar engineer, I designed Radar systems that detects "stuff" in the sky. It is a very very well paid high tech job. The company also had this program which pays for my PHD tuition for this institute called MIT. For this reason everybody thinks that I am crazy to quit my job, (especially my parents) to sit at home to program irrlicht all day.
I guess, i reached a point where I saw that I would be successful in this company, but I didn't want it. I don't want to work to build things I don't want to build for the money. The last thing this world needs is more of the stuff i build.
We need more people that does things for the passion. We need more people to build things to make others happy, and enjoy life. After all, we are all here together. Why spent that time building things that could hurt each other? Instead of building things that would make life fun?
So now I am 25 years old, and I am about to go broke, I will have no income and I don't even know how long my savings can last me... yet deep down inside, i feel a sense of relief and freedom and no money can buy.
I am starting a project called Iamar. I cannot tell you guys too much detail because I want to surprise the forum. I have taught many online lectures in the past, this project is related to that:
here are my free python lectures:
http://wiki.python.org/moin/Intro_to_pr ... nd_Tkinter
You guys have kept me going by all the help you have given me. I don't know how long i can last with out money, I just might have to move back with my parents.
in any case, here will be my temporary website,
freewebs.com/iamar
I will build my own server and set up my own site in the future. If you are interested to find out more of my work, here is a listing of all my books, essays, photographs, video, and even audio stuff i have published. They are all free.
http://www.ourmedia.org/user/4887
I guess, I just want to share my story with the forum because everybody else thinks that i'm crazy. But I have to chase after my own dreams because it is my life. It is my choice what I want to use my life for. And I have chosen to use my life to create something that will help other people. : )
I thank the forum for all the help, I hope the forum will keep helping me with my project.

Well done on having the balls to go for your dream, and if you're happy that's what counts, for now...
But you can't survive without money can you? Surely you parents won't be too happy if you ask to move back in with them because you have no money after quitting such a good job? Are they going to be able to support you? Will they be willing to do so?
Best of luck in your project and life itself!

thanks everybody
Thank you everybody
My parents are angry but I am their son, they will always take me back if it gets to that point, luckily my roommate has joined me in this project, he made even more money than me, so for now he'll support most of my expenses (food, water, and electricity for my computer : )
He still has his job and is working on this part time while i'm doing it full time. I'm lucky to have such a wonderful roommate that also have the same dream.

If what you wanted was to help people, you should never have quit your job so you could write a video game instead. You quit because you have a dream you want to live through and that you enjoy programming. It is good to pursue your dream, but I would advise you to be more realistic than that. Would you quit your job to play World of Warcraft if that was your dream? Of course you wouldn't.

How about u doing the project part time! Having that job and building this project would have had a far less psychological effect on you and the result a better game! Now that you have done something impulsive like quitting a job my best opinion would be to join another firm as you must be qualified pretty good for that kind of a job! May God be with you and help you with your decisions!
Wow. I thought about doing this many times. Work isn't bad for me. It's a rewarding programming job. Although, I would like to spend more time programming my projects in irrlicht. It's pretty tough sometimes to do that with my work schedule and real life. But I managed to get some solid hours in during the weekends.
You're still young at 25. It shouldn't be that hard to find another job. I would recommend finding a position that has good benefits and retirement plan. Work there just for the benefits. Use vacation time to take an hour off each friday or if you have a lot of vacation time, take every other friday off.
If nothing else, start investing what you have made into an IRA or some other kind of investment plan. At 25, you may save enough to retire early like at 45 or something. Then you can program all you want. There are other options like buy up a food chain or something. Something that will self-manage itself and doesn't eat into your personal time but still makes money for you.
Another option is to find a game programming job. There are many good game companies out there -- check gamedev.net and look at their job postings. That could be an excuse to your parents for quiting your job. Mom & dad, I'm putting together my game profolio so that I may be able to land a job at a game programming position for xyz company.
Anyway, I hope something in my post helps you.

welcome aboard chieh!
It may feel a bit weird in the beginning (more than weird, worrying) to know you won't get a paycheck by the end of the month, but I also agree that the feeling of freedom can't be compared to anything.
Don't worry, you're a talented young man. Start doing what you like and the money will follow.
Irrlicht's even payed my bills a couple of times with some projects I presented in Realtime for some companies. (still waiting to get a bill from Niko, heheheheh ). So you might be doing both things at the same time, I mean fun and work.
besides that, dig inside yourself for other stuff you like to do. We all got many things to share and there's a ton of ppl out there needing what you can offer.
Oh yes, just remember to eat every now and then, and things will be fine, heheheh

To answer:
Yes, I have a plan to make money, alot of money.
my previous job was for the gov, they are up to no good ( go watch the movie V for Vendetta, i was well paid for a reason)
my project is to set out to stop them. (you will see what I mean when it comes out)
lastly, my project will make irrlicht programmres rich : ) (yes, you guys)
ps: Let's just say I have a glove that contains motion and pressure sensors. So when you move your hand, the (x,y,z) translation are actually sent to the computer. When you bend your fingers, callbacks are sent as well, as well as when you press on finger tips. Right now, it still requires a USB connection but i'm working on getting it wireless. Any suggestions on how I can program an API so anybody that has this glove can program it however they want?
If I magically have this glove, would anyone interested to build an irrlicht API for it?
