What graphics card do you recommend for newest directX?

Post by imagination304 »

Hi all,

I am using Geforce Fx5200 and I think this is not enough for running all functions of newest DirectX (apr 2006)?

What affordable graphics card would you recommend (Geforce/ati/Sis, etc)?

Thanks in advance.

The ati 9600 is around $80, I got mine sometime last year and its not the best, or close to, but it keeps things smooth on my 800mhz peice of $H!+.

If you have a better proccessor and more mem (i'm only at 256meg and it gets awful on loads), It's recommendable as a great mid-grade card.

Although you didn't ask about audio, the audigy se sound card where I live is $30 a pop. If you happen to have the extra pocket change.

P.S. Don't shop at walmart for you graphics cards. Find a pc store for great prices on hw.

well i bought a radeon x1600xt, it wasn't too expensive, but its still a top range card really, and it plays games like oblivion smoothly, so i recommend it, but i dont have any experiance with any other recent graphics card, so i dont really know how it stacks up against the others..

buy current gen

i wouldn't buy anything older than an ATI x1XXX series of nvidia 7xxx series card. i have a 6800go in my laptop and already i know it won't support shader model 3.0 :-( i just got the darn thing last october, and already outdated :-(

EDIT - i was wrong, it does support shaders 3.0!! :-)
so i guess maybe 1 generation back isn't so bad....

anyway, here's some pretties from newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814131007

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127201

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814133155

all those are <125$, and the first 2 are <100$

i prefer nvidia, despite the fact they cost more for the same performance cuz they have better drivers.

ok first off dont get a X1600/X1300 because both cards are 128bit memory interface which is very slow a X800 can easily beat the poop out of a X1600 because the X800 is 256bit memory get a 256bit card

edit:

if hes agp all those cards u listed are gonna be atleast $40 more

If you want it on the cheap, there is a GeForce 6200 on Newegg for less than $40. I picked it up, and like it - not love it, but hey, at that price for a decently fast fully Direct3D9 compliant video card you really can't go wrong.

the 6000 nividia series supports Pixel Shader 3. the X1xx ATI series does as well. the X series, however, like the X800 that master1234567 suggested, does not

i wouldn't get anything without Pixel Shader 3, so completely ignore master1234567's suggestion

If you are looking for quite a bit good card, my last shopping ended with :

Nvidia GeForce 6600 256 mb ddr /128-bit memory bus

I can play Oblivion with HDR(but on lowest resolutions :P) very well. (and I have just 2 ghz atholon and 512 ddr)

And pixel shaders 3.0 rulez.

care to provide any reviews as to how "big" a performance difference there is between the two?

hving 128bit is bad because it transfers data along the memory slower

Why not wait?

Post by Forexs »

This late in the game I'd probably wait for DX10 cards - Can't be too long now.
