I just decided against IrrEdit, I'd wait for the next version to come out because from what I read (It was a while back when I read it, so don't quote me on this) that it was supposed to fix a few terrain issues.
so stick to meshes...
maybe you could create the terrain in DeleD or Blender from the height map and textures(deled Advanced Height map plugin or something)
check the FAQ forum for tips on making terrain in blender.
CTerrainSceneNode doesn't have deserialize or serialize like the other nodes do, and there's a small change needs adding to the terrain factory. Need to test this before commiting to SVN.. which will be sometime tonight when I get home.

edit: erm.. not only did i post to and move the wrong topic in my haste, i also realised theres no access to files from inside a scene node... i can't think of a clean way to do the factory, any ideas? is passing the filesystem to the terrain in a new constructor bad and dirty?
