Johnny 5 Poker

Post by JP »

Here's part 2 in my little Johnny 5 game series, and this one's actually in C++! :D

I just wanted to start up this thread to make me keep at it and get something playable out soon! Here's some early screenshots:

As you can no doubt see from the screenies, it's a 3D POV style poker game (texas hold 'em). I thought of this a while ago and have never seen a 3D poker game, they always seem to be 2D top down affairs, so i thought i'd have a go at making something a bit more immersive!

Ha ha, very nice. Good luck on the poker AI if this is going to be a single player game. I find a lot of single player poker games really suck as they just use simple formulas to check the percentage of winning etc. Fold automatically when you make a big bet, and never bluff.

Why Johnny Five I must ask? I saw another Johnny 5 must die shooter I think you made? Is this to simply save time from having to make human poker models? You have to get a cowboy hat and some shades on him though.

Good luck.

Yeah Johnny 5 Must Die is mine aswell :D In this game i'm using him again for the very reason you say, i'm no modeller and i couldn't find any free models of humans that would be suitable. (these games are just meant as demos for me to get into the games industry anyway so i hope that as i wouldnt be modelling in my job position the employers won't mind something like this heh).

And for the AI i'm not sure how good that will be, it will most likely suck very much like you say, at least to start with anyway, though i would certainly like to make it better to make it more impressive though i may not have much time to do that.

I hear that, we float along the same boat. If you catch my "drift." Get it! Drift cause of the boats...ooooh me...

Programmer myself, but I do enjoy modeling and texturing. Not too good at it though, could never do a human, but ok for static objects. Always nice to have something to fall back on I always say.

I also attempted to do a 2D poker game for a project in a VB class, ran into the same problem with the AI, and did some research on poker AI, the one site I remember running into was the Poki AI site (http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~games/poker/ ... #RESOURCES) which does the poker AI for games like stacked, and from their site, apparently won a poker AI competition. They don't have the AI source, but some interesting articles to read while on the shitbin.

That model is really good! Nice work there :D

Hopefully i'll have something playable up in the next few days. Currently the poker game is just run on the command line with stuff being printed out and betting amounts read in etc. But i think i should get the game working perfectly before trying to integrate it into the 3Dness, but maybe that's not so necessary!

Where can I found CARD DECK Texture like yours ?

Post by Danny Gilbert »

Hi JP !

Very beautiful look your card game. I did not found any playable demo or code source in your web site. Is it open source ? Did you finish this project ?
Did you draw yourself your cards ?

Thanks for your info.

I abandoned this project unfortunately for several reasons, shame, would have been nice to finish it!

So no there's no playable demo or source available. The cards i just got from google basically.

I think feature creep would be inevitable:

Allow players to move around to try and view each others' cards.

Arm players so that they can punish anyone who tries to do so.

Await the inevitable bloodbath.
