I've just started looking into the games side of things having been working mainly in academic applications of virtual reality. I am curious as to know the relative merits of different cross-platform engines, for example speed, reliability and features. Also can anyone recommend a good piece of software for actually building the environments?
Best,
Rod

I know that my University has a visuallisation center(with some very very nice clusters) for some pretty big projects. I know they use EON Studio/Reality which is used for rapid creation of 3d environments. I have only worked with it a little in a couple of my classes and it seems nice.
For game development There is a pretty good comparisons of game engines http://www.conitec.net/a4faq.htm It could be a little bias as the author is a company that sells game development software but it really is pretty open and honest in its discussion. They recommend other software not just there own including Irrlicht for game development.
Hope that helps!
