Hmmm... When designing games with Irrlicht, I use DX, but when playing games, I like OpenGL a bit better (Doom 3/Quake 4 was OGL, wasn't it?), so it's a toss up.

I know that opengl was used for americas army.

and openAL for sound effects.

I personally do not know all the differences but one major difference I know of personally is that directx will not work on anything but windows.

as far as I understand please correct me if I'm wrong.

also I was not able to make bump mapping of the models with irrlicht work it seemed to have a bug that turned my material into a rainbow of color interpolated around the mesh. is this openGL's fault? is it mine? or is it a bug in irrlicht or possibly a missing feature? I don't have the answers all I know is that directx seems to be the best choice for me until I understand linux a bit better and it seems to me that directx is better and that the only ones supporting openGL are either pro linux (non-windows) or simply like the speed of openGL.

openGL appears to get lower frame rates if I remember correctly but thats because it's capped (maybe I'm thinking of software renderer?) but in turn seems to have a simular visual quality to directx (possibly minus advanced features like bump mapping?)

in the end the choice is not about preference it would seem but rather a need considering that both have certain pro's and con's.

One thing about openGL is that I heard (or witnessed discussion about) was that the newest improvments in devolopment would surpass directx but we won't know this untill it happens i suppose.

hopefully this will aid people in understanding the differences take it easy peoples. 8)

Bump mapping works with opengl, but it's a bit more ugly (I'm using an N*Vidia GF-FX5200, if that makes any difference.)

I'm pretty sure most computers have OGL support. I could be wrong, though.

I have to use OpenGL/Mesa for crossplatofrm stuff (Linux) and I prefere using OpenGL for programming but in windows with Irrlicht I dont mind DirectX... because I dont have to look at its horrible interface.

Generally I find OpenGL better though. Right down to its shader interface.
But thats just becuase it suits my coding style.
