I realize that this is a rather old topic but I figured I'd add my five cents to it (yep, you get 3 extra pennies!)

There's only one MMORPG I've ever enjoyed for more than a few minutes at a time, and that's RuneScape. Sure, it has subpar graphics compared to most, but its presentation and approach goes far above and beyond any other game out there. Virtually all MMORPGs out there are focused around one thing: combat. If you ain't fighting, you ain't playing. That gets boring VERY quickly. RuneScape shatters this by assigning individual experience levels to skills, with combat level having no effect on non-combat skills. So you could spent your entire character "career" simply baking pies if you wanted to, and never really have to enter combat at all. Another nice thing about the game is that you are NEVER locked into a "character class"...even your combat abilities are broken down into individual levels...Attack, Strength, Defense, Range, Magic, and Hit Points are all seperate experience levels. Another MAJOR bonus, which is a direct result of the multiple experience level model, is the wide variation of quests. In RuneScape, you are NEVER sent out to "kill 20 goblins to gather 10 goblin toes, then come back and I'll give you some lollerskatez!" or something equally stupid like in virtually all other MMORPGs. The ONLY time you're sent to kill a specified number of monsters is when you're on a "Slayer mission"...Slayer is another skill you can train that, again, has its own experience level (it's a combat-based skill but it's unrelated to combat level or any other combat stats). Your combat level is not determined by a collection of experience points but instead it's based on the combination of the Attack, Strength, Defene, Range, Magic, Prayer, and Hit Points levels, so some players develop "Pures", or characters that only train in a certain skill (usually Attack) to keep their combat level low while having one stat level very high.

One pet peeve of mine when it comes to most MMORPGs out there is the lack of spellchecking. I've seen some hideous English butcheries. I must have reported 40 such things when on the private beta for EROSE (now defunct, as predicted). This is another place RuneScape does very well...since it's developed by Brits, the English is exceptional, and it's extremely rare to even find a missing punctuation mark, let alone a typo.

The biggest issue for me is PvP. Some MMORPGs shove this down your throat, some skip it altogether. RuneScape strikes a good balance, in the sense that you cannot enter a PvP situation unless you deliberately go to an area where it's possible. Many MMORPGs I've played utilize PvP *everywhere*, which is retarded. Making it possible everywhere just shows that the game is combat-based and, for me, it'll be boring as hell.

In my opinion, more games should be made like RuneScape. The split experience model, the lack of class limitations, the expansive questing style, the list of positives is too long to write here. And I've played a LOT of MMORPGs...I musta tried at least 95% of the list at mmorpg.com and came away with a sour taste in my mouth for just about all of them.

I definately agree with the idea about the speaking skill of the users though..."u don no hw mny tiemz i gota dele wid dis babytak". Irritating... :evil:

I also now know to avoid any MMORPG in which people call the enemies "mobs". That insinuates a combat RPG, which equals "BORING!" to me.

yeah but ive to say that oblivions world seams some way death compared to gothic or so ... i dont know why ;)

Thats the nicer side of Graal, you make your dungeon/house/whatever, it gets checked by a level admin and when its ok its in the game.
Guild Wars is not MMORPG. It ony makes a ilusion of it (same like D&D Online), becose players meet each other in cities or arenas if they are in party. By a rest of the game u are playing alone making quests... Its booring.

But from my side the best MMORPG is Lineage II Chronicles and Ragnarok Online (old but its a real masterwork). And now why: Character are designed in the way that players need to support each other, which makes a comunity in a game. Each player and character cannot do nothing without support of the other classes in a game. In Silkroad, Lost Chaos and others games in that style we have a lots of players but they are plaing alone, ofcorse there are some events which need frew players to cooporate but that is not enought is more like Massive Single Player then MMO. If some one trying to make a good MMO he need to think about making good cooperative system in his game. That is a key to success.

Lineage II is based on character lvl so its have "power lvling" but this is not all. To have a realy strong in that game u need to have good support from others.

Multiplayer simply means many players on the same game, not "cooperative play" or anything along those lines.

Maybe it's time for a game like 'Diablo 2' multiplayer instead of making new mmorpg games every few months with same gameplay 'techniques'.

The good example is LOTR Online where they ripped from WoW everything they could. Only models and story is a bit diffrent but the game structure goes exacly the same way.

The main games are good: WoW, Lineage 2 and Guild Wars <- these are the leaders.

But the rest of smaller games is going crazy: all these Knight/Silkroad/RajaOnline/KalOnline/MuOnline , in China/Korea they make a new mmo every month lol.

It everything goes the same way, they all do same things and use the same systems.

Can't developers just stop taking stuff from WoW/Lineage2/GW and make something really diffrent, really new ? Because for me it's getting a bit boring nowadays. I tried many diffrent games and played them a while (some longer time, some a bit short time) and as I liked WoW the most I'll stick with this one. I also enjoyed MuOnline where all was made in 'Diablo-like' style.

My point is for example LOTR <- another game which is the copy of the old , already made structure.

I wonder how would look Warhammer Online or Conan Online <- I guess they look exacly the same -> again 10 000 types of monsters, 40 000 items to find, 45 skills for each class , 5000 quests and 15 instances awaitng you 'our dear traveler'.

Another problem are also good advertisments and commercials to show that it's going to be good. Blizzard didn't have to show anything. Their first games were hits so WoW was going to be a hit for sure.

I think mmo game designers should really do a research about the gaming industry and notice that: WoW, Lineage and GW are the most popular and greatest games. They think that they'll make money on copying game style and making it in new world ? They're wrong.

It's just my opinion. MMO games are very popular nowadays but they need a new revolutionary gameplay.

There is a chance that everything will change with upcoming Huxley by Webzen on Unreal 3 engine. Also physics is going to be advanced.

Or maybe Fallout Online will bring something new and cool. Maybe it's time to leave most of the stats away of every character and leave the character to the player, so that player would have full control over everything. (a real time dynamic gameplay, not any stupid timers with % hit stuff and such/ but a giantic world whatever if futuristic or not with a lot of players and items of armor / weaponry)

BTW. Oblivion online - if they would made something like this - it would be awesome I think. ( I mean game similiar to Oblivion but mmo). And milions of interesting quests and things to do in cooperative and stuff.

A muliplayer game like Diablo2 would probably be funner than most MMORPG's that are being released lately. They all look exactly the same.

Personally I'm looking forward to Space Invaders Online and Sokoban Online, though I doubt they'll ever see the day :D

I think a fresh approach for a MMORPG would be to take away the player's control over what's going on, and force him to walk into the world without knowing what's in store for him. Most MMORPGs are so incredibly predictable that the gameplay easily gets boring. Suppose the player gets to choose his general direction, but otherwise has to learn what skills he happens to find upon his way. Almost every player will feel unfairly treated because he didn't get skill XX when player YY got it, but characters will be more unique, and won't be labeled "16 air elem", "prot monk", etc.

A world of unpredictable encounters will also encourage flexibility in builds; something people usually don't care for in groups. Most groups want specialized units (tanks, nukers, etc) and won't care for a guy who can cure poison cause they know they will only be fighting fire giants. Loosely called the "Rander syndrome", because Ranger classes typically are jacks of all trades and masters of none and not useful if you know what you're going fight in advance.

Yeah diablo definately reached the holy grail in terms of mmorpg goodness. I had some friends playing it years and years after its release, it was kind of like the CounterStrike of mmorpgs, never got old.

thats true, but wow has something charming. when i first time saw WoW i said "wow!".if ultima wants to be better than wow - it needs good 3d client, since there is no nice client - UO sucks for me
