I didn't bother to ever read CS feature list. CS also has software renderer, but who needs it in the times of Shader Model 4.0 ?
Crystal Space Developers dropped the software renderer a few versions ago.

DirectX has been available since Windows 95. However, with ever changing technology, many users have had to use the DirectX Web update available from Microsoft's website. As for OpenGL, Vista is the first Windows operating system to support it by default. However, some in-store bought XP and older computers had OpenGL drivers installed with the graphic cards.
