Yeah, guest was handy. I asked my first few nooby questions when I wasn't really sure if I wanted to sign up for a forum if I wasn't going to use the engine.

let me explain.. guest allows anonymity.. in the real world for the sake of good people anonymity is essential...did you people learn nothing in school? how about on the street?

point is this.. unless it's a major security hole..it has to stay.. but it should be reworked.

I'm going to say this one time and one time only NIKO I will help you fix, moderate, anything you want to the forums.. I'm no pro at web design and I havent actually built a forum or worked with php.. but I'm also the guy that came here 6 months ago knowing nothing at all about C++ and last night released the most advanced GUI builder not only for Irrlicht but I think on the planet.

You make the next move..wiether you post here..or e-mail me... if the hacker problem gets out of control which it already has before you go taking the forums down please contact me I WILL solve this problem for you or die trying.

If I have to custom build a forum for you that can not be hacked or spammed and I will. when I read that you had been hacked for the 3rd time from some noob ass 7331 h4x0r fag it pissed me off so bad my face turned blue.
Wow, you're kinda aggresive, Midnight. JK

Anyways, I think we should keep guest, if it gets out of hand, you can try having guest posts scanned by mods before having them posted, although that might be a lot of posts to scan, just an idea.

My vote is: get the rid of it.

Most boards eventually get guest posting disabled, for the simple reason as popularity grows so does legimiate user posts and spam as well - you will have to keep an awfully big band of moderators to keep up once spammers find a board that allows bots to post without any fuzz. (Even with guest posting disabled it can go rampant sometimes.)

Even without the spam problems, I don't see the point in guest posting. It doesn't take long to create an account (c'me on, really, you can count the seconds it takes!), and once you have an account you can just tick in the "Keep logged in" button which means you don't have to log in each time in case typing 14 letters will bother your fingers too much. *g* As for the anonimity stuff, heh? Just because you have to make an account noone said you have to fill it with any information that can lead to your identification. Providing information about yourself is voluntary, and having a fake-data-account means no less anonimity than posting as a guest.

except, if your firewall and browser settings are aggressive this options does not work. The cookie gets blocked.

also if someone really wants to spam the forum they are going to create an account will false info anyways. You end up back at square one anyways.

If someone really wants to mess your PC up, they will do it no matter your high security settings. So what's the point in them either?

So you delete the post and the account and if its pure spam block the ip.

IMHO it should be disabled, the anonymity is a null argument, just create an annonymous account with bs info. The ease of use is the same as typing in your password/account and checking a checkbox, or setting your browser to remember your username and password and just clicking "Log In". The only thing you get from Guest is spam.

So you delete the post and the account and if its pure spam block the ip.
Which they then reset their modem, get a new IP and the cycle starts again. If you start blocking the IP address then you starting blocking legit users too (both guest and account holders), who have the same ISP and live in the same region as your spammer.

The only thing you get from Guest is spam.
this is disproven everyday on this forum.

even if all you get is false security.

I'm not sure why you guys want to fix something that really is not broken in the first place, but at the end of the day it really doesn't matter what we argue here. :D

Guest should be an option!

Just sometimes anonymity is fine as you just have an idea how a problem may be solved, and not want to go closer to it.

If one wants to cut his/herself with turning guest option off?
Those people will get less help.

At least from me!

My 2c:

I vote Guest OFF.

The con is that there will be a few people who would've asked a question that dont, because they dont want to take the time to register. The pro is that much noise from the forums will be eliminated.

Personally, I've never recieved help from a guest account (excluding users too lazy to log in ;). Further more, questions posed by guest accounts are typically redundant and ignorant of FAQ and other threads by registered users.

Oh, and dear god: do NOT give Midnight mod status!
