My friend confirmed that 3DSM can work on Vista, so if you use that, then no worries. Visual Studio is very nice on it, running super fast thanks to the native .NET integration.
Big bummers for me is still the fact that not all versions come with DVD decoders, but my laptop came with some DVD software so I easily cured that problem.
I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of this OS this year... but Ubuntu and Linspire's partnering is also something I'm looking forward to (CNR is intruiging). Ubuntu is still the big challenger (on the Linux side) to Vista right now, IMHO. Mac OSX is alright... but I just don't really like using it. Haiku is also an interesting project.

Well I float between both worlds
Xubuntu on my laptop (only has a wee 5gb drive - so no need
for KDE/GNOME etc).
On my main dev machine, its running Suse 10.2 and WinXP pro just now,
(although Ive got my Dell vista upgrade to get yet). As to which is best,
I think it depends on what you are doing... for me, linux wins when
Im coding (cant beat emacs...)
And windows wins for gaming (although supertux is quite addictive )

I love how linux and mac users think they're special.
and I got news for all you vista reviewers that are dumb enough to use the stolen beta's installation specs.
I GOT NEWS FOR YA vista doesn't use 1gb of ram anymore nor 20gb of HDD which is only $20 these days you cheap bastards.
in fact it "almost" uses less then XP... it has been optimised greatly and the improvements and useability compared to XP are obvious.
however I can tell already windows will be trying some bullshit with vista to try and milk another penny from everyones pocket so I'm gonna sit back and watch the war and stick to my plain old XP considering I've spent a good part of my life understanding it and mastering the interface.
linux and mac users need to wake the gently caress up... you think after 10 years there is actually a chance in hell these OS's can even compare to windows?
its not about the OS you morons its about what you can do with them. e.g. software!!
tell me where are all the mac and linux irrlicht projects?? I rest my case.

What, is it now 2gb of ram and 40gb of HDD?Midnight wrote:I GOT NEWS FOR YA vista doesn't use 1gb of ram anymore nor 20gb of HDD which is only $20 these days you cheap bastards.
Well, if we look back the last 10 years and see what has happened in both camps I think you're absolutely right: there's no change in hell that Windows can be even compared to those.linux and mac users need to wake the ***** up... you think after 10 years there is actually a chance in hell these OS's can even compare to windows?

I'm currently using Windows Vista on an HPPavilion9000 laptop with an NVidia 9600 Go card and 2GB RAM and 1.6Core 2 Duo Processor. I just bought this thing less than a month ago and it came with Vista. My older desktop(with ATI 9200) runs XP Home. My OS was dependent on my tax refund and microsoft getting Vista out when they say they will. If my refund had come earlier or Vista came out later, I would have gotten XP instead(probably with free Vista express upgrade, though I wouldn't have done it). Since Vista came out before I got my tax refund, I got Vista Home Premium Instead. In reality, I had no preference to Vista over XP and would have been happy either way since I don't need DX10 just yet. As far as Macs go, 10 years ago, I didn't like the thing just because it seemed weird to me(i was only 12) and today, well I got used to the WIN series and never cared for anything else. I have never even tried Linux or any of it's flavors(don't even know what they are or mean), so I can't say anything about them. I haven't seen Mac lately either and I'm sure it isn't like it was 10 years ago.
Macs are a dream come true handling big memory files for print, and Adobe heavy filters etc.It also handles very well Video edition.
And they've got imho, the right idea of what desktop coolness is...
But hey, everything can do.

Finally making games again!

i defintely agree here. I haven't seen anything special in a while. Vista's Aero display is OK, but not ground-breaking or anything like it. That's just an example.XP with all it's updates are probably just as secure as Vista, if not more seeing that Vista just came out. It's like people say that Mac and Linux are more secure. I don't believe it, rather I believe that they just haven't been exploited yet since they don't have as much of a user base. Same as with Web Browsers like IE and Firefox.RabidLockerGnome wrote:IMHO, they all do it wrong. It's all just polished versions of 1990's desktop operating systems. ..............deffffffinitely better than previous versions.. BUT, theyre all just improving the past a little bit. we need some new, groundbreaking technology already!
