I'll spell it out: you (yes, you) need to understand the very basic concepts of working directory, and relative file paths.
Once you understand them, then the problem will be obvious, as will the solution. If randomly moving directories and files around helps you to understand the issue, then that's fine, but your goal should be comprehension, not simply fixing your current problem.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
1. Extract irrEdit-1.4.2.zip to c: drive
so you will have c:\irrEdit-1.4.2
2. copy all your models to c:\irrEdit-1.4.2
e.g.
c:\irrEdit-1.4.2\mymodel1.3ds
c:\irrEdit-1.4.2\mymodel2.3ds
3. run c:\irrEdit-1.4.2\irrEdit.exe
4. Using irredit, save your project as c:\irrEdit-1.4.2\myScene.irr
5. continue adding your models to the scene
6. save again c:\irrEdit-1.4.2\myScene.irr
7. open your game code in your c++ IDE (say visual studio)
8. load the scene like this smgr->loadScene ('myScene.irr')
9. compile and link, assuming the output is compilation.exe
10. copy compilation.exe to c:\irrEdit-1.4.2
hence you will get c:\irrEdit-1.4.2\compilation.exe
11. run c:\irrEdit-1.4.2\compilation.exe
so you will have c:\irrEdit-1.4.2
