3D Character Creation Software

Hi all,
Is there a cheap (read no cost) 3D character creation and animation software out there? I just cannot afford Maya or 3D Max...

It is not that good in modelling as other modellers,
but its better than good enough for animating

to model the character you can use very good free modelers like blender or wings3d; to rig it and animate it you can use fragmotion:

it's cheap (US $20)
Although I understand you can rig and animate in Blender as well, which is free.

yup, you can with blender too.
frag motion seems can become quite handy even if only as a converter fixer, like a different milkshape...those tools are allways handy, sooner or later...
