It is true... I use linux... and not just any linux, one ov the most hardcore distros! It is all Slackware or Slackware derivatives on my workstations ( slam, slackintosh & Vector ), and a custom distro ov slackware I call XLX (Xhrit's LinuX) on my servers. It is basicly a stripped down slackware( to fit on one disk), with a few added features.

My girlfriend uses windows XP on her workstation, and windows 2000 on her servers... but her 10 year old son uses Slackware. I made him read the windows EULA - every line. Now he won't touch windows with a 10 foot pole.

I still use windows XP on my tablet, and windows mobile on my axim PPC. The only reason my tablet uses windows, is because it has to be taken apart with a t9 torque wrench (and I don't have one!!) The funny thing is, the tablet is a transmeta - and came factroy installed with transmeta's own Midori Linux (a custom slackware build made by Linus himself just for transmeta!)... but the person I got it from off ebay had already opened the case and replaced the disk drive with one that has windows. The only reason my axim does not run linux is because linux needs to have the power management features hacked in, and I don't have the desire to hack drivers!!

If we are choosing windows tho, I'll have to pick ME. Or SEL (Win98Second Edition, Light). They are both more or less the same, but SEL is slipstreamed down to about 200 megs, and ME has added support for 2k's features. The main reason is I boot to CLI, and it is a pita to do in xp or vista.

LOL

I use Mandriva (yes, i know, but I'm new-ish to linux) Linux Free 2006, the official OS (at least for now) of RF2 development. It's fast, very beautiful looking, and it has KDevelop, my favorite C++ ide.

PC1: Win2k and WinXP pro (dual boot)
PC2: Winxp pro only
PC3: Suse 10 and WinXP home
Laptop: Suse 10 and WinXP pro

They all work great but I tend to spend more time on linux lately. Basically Windows offers me some tools not available in linux for my everyday stuff (3dsmax, Giles, Deled, Cshop, etc) but now that I'm catching up on Blender I can do much more stuff in linux. I still miss a cool lightmapper for the penguin. (for Irrlicht I use Radiant and Q3 bsps).

@Andycr: got any link to Linux Free 2006? Would like to check it out!

Linux, WinXp, and Win98SE (yes, the one that doesn't need activation).

Most of my time is spent on Linux, because
#1 it's great
#2 assuming i bought Win3.1/98/XP in 6 years, microsoft products can be considered like a tax.

 Perhaps i'll buy microsoft again if they allow to compile the kernel and all the tools. Before that I'll buy something from Apple, and will never leave Linux even if i was paid for.

@Andy: thanks for the link! Yup I even bought the pro version; too bad it kinda disappeared. :( The good thing is I got this gorgeous book you guys printed! Of course I'd be interested in RF2, specially if you guys are using linux to develop it. Feel free to PM or email me with info :D
hardcore distros
I thought Gentoo was the hardcorest of them all! Being compiled from the kernel and up with special flags for your processor and hardware , etc! What are these distros then? Again, any link s to info?

Slackware is the oldest distribution still being maintained. Along with Debian, it is an offshoot from the original linux distro : the Softlanding Linux System. It is a minimalist distro that is built for stability; as such it has few tools and uses the more stable 2.4 kernel. Gentoo provides gentoolkit, portage and emerge, and the latest bleeding edge kernel.

Installing gentoo from scratch involves setting up an environment through which Portage can download source code from the Internet and build the rest of the "core" of the system and any desired applications.

In Slackware, you can do the same thing - except there is no automagical tool to help you. You have to do it all by hand. That is hardcore.

:)

Vector Linux is a more user-friendly (re: latest kernel, mad eyecandy, and set up wizards) version ov slackware. It comes with enlightenment, if that clears things up! Slackintosh is the PPC mac version ov slackware, and Slam is the 64 bit version.

Thanks for the explanationXhrit!

I used to use Gentoo as my favorite distro, but with this "emerge" thingie you can really screw things up badly. In the end I would emerge this certain package that would change this certain critical script and then bam! no more audio or no more internet or no more 3d accel. Then it was forum time looking for a fix. I got tired of that so I decided to give a binary distro a try and I tried Suse. It's pretty stable and its updating tool (YAST) is pretty straightforward. Thru it I downloaded all the necesary tools to have a nice working environment and for the extra crisp I'd rather download and compile things by hand.

I'm digging more about slackware and Vector linux.

thnx again!

I know Gentoo is cool. perhaps it was me updating too often, almost everyday! It's so bleeding-edge that I checked gentoo-portage.com for every new package released then I ended up installing stuff that was incompatible and therefore generating a bunch of conflicts on my install.

ps. Careful with "emerge -U world" !

lol that would do it

i have to unmask a lot of stuff to get the latest things, or even anything at all, cuz a lot of the amd64 packages are marked with ~amd64... my package.keywords file is getting pretty big :D

i havent really done anything with it yet, though... i got blender installed yesterday, and that makes the last of all my development tools... i still gotta install my wireless card drivers (gotta use ndiswrapper cuz its a stupid broadcom card), then i'll be ready to use it in production... then i can move on and get everything installed in xp x64 cuz i havent done any of that yet either
