Autodesk FBX support (project or planning to support it)

Post by christianclavet »

Hi. I've read that the FBX format was created by Autodesk but they released it as open source.

This format is supported now by major content creation packages (Autodesk 3DS, Autodesk Maya, Newtek Lightwave, Luxology Modo, SoftImage XSI, Eyeon software)

It would be great if a project be started to create a loader for this (We could then export to .IRRmesh and this will allow getting the assets without too much trouble.

This projet cover a lot (It even allow embetting). But for IRRlicht we would only to support what the engine allow and nothing more.

Why limit to re-exporting to IrrMesh. I mean, I'm all for the format, let's just try our best to support it fully ^^

Well that was a wasted 113MB download. The FBX SDK is free as in free beer, not free software. The license isn't covered by opensource.org, and by the look of it denies the rights to use in a file conversion service among other things. I didn't accept the license, so I don't know if the source code is included in the SDK.

Humm... I'm sorry to hear that. Their site told that it was open source. Didnt know that they made such restrictions. Too bad.
Thanks Bitplane, to have put some time to check this.
