Project FlightSim (Demo posted!)

Post by empirepro »

Team name: Empire Production (not registered)

Project name: Project FlightSim

Brief description: Project FlightSim is stage 1 of a 10 stage Development project to create a Space themed MMO. However stage 1 is NOT a MMO. Stage 1 will be to create a full Single player Space Flight Simulation using the Irrlicht Engine.

Target aim: Project FlightSim will be open source Freeware. At the end of the 10 stage development project the Client will be open source while the server is closed source.

Compensation: Currently all work will be done with out payment. However at the end of the project team members will recieve a percentage of revenue.

Technology: The game is being made with Irrlicht Engine which is a C++ 3d game engine.

Talent needed: Right now I am looking for a small team consisting of 1 programmer, 1 3d artist, and 1 concept artist.

Team structure: At the moment there is only me. I have started modeling the solar system, programming, and I have created a forum where all work will be done.

Website: Forum: http://galacticonline.proboards92.com/index.cgi

Contacts: deadmanheat@yahoo.com

Previous Work by Team: None

Additional Info: None being released yet. Project FlightSim is nothing more then just a Space Flight Simulation!

Feedback: Any would be great!

Not again...

By the way, you gonna show everyone at least you've done something (more than just game design and 3d models, which don't mean much). Maybe... some kick-ass demo? :P

My first set of Screenshots will be posted on my forum Monday with more being posted every Monday from then until the game is complete. Videos will be posted the first Tuesday of every month high lighting what has been done in the past month. Once I get home from Christmas vacation and development ramps up I may post a couple of screenshots either saturday or sunday and then more once again on Monday. At the finish of each stage a Playable opensource demo will be posted on my forum. I will also post any useable code snippets that I think people may find interesting here on this forum to help out other users.

I guess I should have waited until Monday once I got my first screenshots to post anything about this project. Maybe I won't share any code snippets or anything for that matter with you guys since it seems all I am getting from this forum so far is negative feedback!

Can you post a link to a project you have finished? Doesn't matter how trivial - a simple demo would suffice.

I don't have one at the moment but providing everything goes good over the weekend I will post a demo of what I have worked on with this Flight Sim on Monday along with screenshots.

I thought the very same thing...
he just wondered if you would be putting up some screenshots / demos soon, you answered "yes", all happy.
Not negative feedback, just curiosity to know more before delivering the verdict.

IMO, he's annoyed by your first post; just hit the EDIT button of your first post and clean it up a bit :P

I don't know how long you've been around the forums, but there have been WAY too many cases of such MMO projects never getting very far.

We'd all LOVE to see you make progress and complete your project; unlike other similar-sounding projects, at least you've clarified how you're going to set the foundations (via a single-player only version initially), rather than just jumping the gun with Online.

Best of luck, and keep us all updated!

Ok thanks for that. My post was a template post from gamedev.net and I guess their code for font and stuff is diffrent then this forum. I have fixed my post. If you join my forum you will be emailed with new updates when I post new screenshots, videos, demos, or new information.

Got that right!

Make sure you know what kind of syntax the board of subject is using, and use the preview button (I know gamedev doesn't have one, but Irrlicht does).

Best luck in your project.

For any one who wants to see an example of my work here are some screenshots from a test game I was working on to test out some diffrent ideas I had. The game was made using Beyond Virtual before I switched to Irrlicht.

By the way, Irrlicht is NOT a "3d game engine". There's a lot more to a game engine than just the graphics. Espeically one which aims to be for an MMO. Do you have the resources to run an MMO? Money? Time? Harware? Can you think for yourself? You've used a template from game dev and filled it in extremly breifly, outlining the same game that every other MMO fanatic come "game developer" does, and expect people to be interested.

Don't take this the wrong way, most of us have made this type of post in the past. This is more of a guidence but, if you decide to take it offensively then I don't care. You need to learn alot more. This is evident from reading your posts. Go make some nice little demos, then some small projects on your own. Hopefully however, you've taken this the right way and have learnt your first lesson. Of course though, if your like everybody else then you'll tell me to shove it up my arse and that your gonna do it anyway and it's going to be brilliant. In which case, good luck to you.

This is the type of small, fun and clever project I advise you to take on -> http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=25343

and this is the type of project your hoping to take on... this one actually got further than most and you should learn alot from readin through it -> http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ ... cifi+racer

I also wish you the best of luck. But you should do a little more research before starting a project of this size. MMO's take a lot of time to make. A lot more money to make, and 99% of programmers looking to help out will not want to code an MMO.

Also your theme is much along the lines of http://www.eve-online.com a very popular space MMO.

If you can get the people to do it, I say go for it. You will be fighting a giant though.

Best of luck to you. Take a look over that site above. See what they did right, and what they are doing wrong. It's could help you or encourage you to be a little more creative.

Looks pretty good. Remember that with this type of game you can get away with having a nice static image in the background of your game.
