Does anyone here besides me not use C++?

If you are a new Irrlicht Engine user, and have a newbie-question, this is the forum for you. You may also post general programming questions here.

Does anyone here besides me not use C++?

Post by Time of Death »

I use a DLL the enables the use or Irrlicht with Game Maker. I know some of several other languadges apart from using Game Maker such as Flash, Perl, Javascript and html. But I must admit, C++ is a bit much for me right now (I'm only 15, by the way). I was just wondering if I'm the only true novice here or if there are many like me. I also want to get to know more about these forums, seeing as I might try to find help here much (The documentation and comments for the DLL I use are far too brief to learn much from). I think I'll go register now.

Thanks,

Time of Death

Yeah, it's going to be a big problem not knowing C++ when using Irrlicht. It is fairly easy to get to grips with however if you don't know C++ it's going to go straight over your head unfortunatly. I would think you would get far more help in the GM forums as it was one of their members who created the DLL for you to use Irrlicht with it.

You'll probably be able to get limited help here but I'm not really sure how the DLL works with GM to be able to say what you can learn from here.

Are there guys on their forums who have created stuff with the Irrlicht plugin? This is mostly a C++ forum, everyone knows C++ to some extent, I don't think anyone here is using Irrlicht if they don't know anything about it. Not being an expert isn't a problem however, if you know the basics of the language you can probably muddle through.

So I'm not the only young member, and not the only one who doesn't know C++. Well, I'm glad to hear that. I looked at some C++ guides a while ago.... *Whistles* those example codes were tough stuff, and weren't explained well enough for someone who for the most part only knows GML. I'll try again; maybe it's be easier for me to understand now that I've gotten a little experience with other languadges.

As for getting help on the GM forum, I don't think many people could help me. There was only a small link out of a hundred in a pinned thread that was directed to a site where the Irrlicht converter was one of the many avaliable DLLs. Also, there aren't many GM users who have much experience. Those who do mostly aren't active any more. There are some, but not many.

Thanks for the help.

If you are only 14-15 then there is nothing to consider, go for C++ and learn it. Its great language and it will be useful for you in the future even if you will not work with Irrlicht anymore.

I am 30 and I was programing a little bit in the past but not much since I am interesting more in 3D art. Before I was working with DarkBasic which have its own Basic like language. I went for Irrlicht especialy becouse it use C++ ...of course its harder to learn but gives you much more freedom at the end. Its posible to learn C++ to some solid level in several months 3-6 months should be enough.

Its much easier to learn C++ for somebody young as you than somebody old like me since you have your head still clean and open to learn new concepts, believe me...

And word of warning, its not easy ...its hard especialy at the begining but if you will not give up sooner or later it brings its fruits.
...try to search internet for tutorials and help ...there are plenty around.

for example:
http://www.cprogramming.com/begin.html
http://www.technipal.com/cpp/index.html
http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/cclass/cclass.html

try to get book: Howe to think in C++
...you can download free online wersion on many places at internet.

I'm 14 and have been working with C++ for 2 years making games. I learned it when I was 10.

I, too, am surprised by the competance level of some so young. It is encoraging for the future, I was still struggling with BASIC at 15, after that I didn't really look at programming for a few years and got back into it at 18. One year later and I'm still learning C++, but I recon it's a continous process anyway. I learnt the basics within a few months. I think it bodes well for you ToD, maybe a young mind leans quicker than the older heads here.

Don't feel bad about not knowing C++. Despite what many people say, it is definitely not an easy langauge. True, the basics may be somewhat simple, but C++ is by far the most difficult and complicated language you will ever learn.

Personally, I think C++ should be phased out of existence. There are plenty of higher level languages that rival or better C++ in speed, but have a much more modern feature set (garbage collection, first class functions...). Like OCaml and Lisp.

It takes developers to do that, since most people ( including me ) don't really know much about it then it's not really going to be an option.

Personally, I wish I'd learned it a bit younger. I didn't do any programming until I was 15 and only learned C++ when I was almost 16. I learned the basics in about a month. I don't think its all that terribly hard if you have a book to refer to and don't expect to be perfect. There is a great deal of similarity between all languages I think (from my limited perspective, I only know some Basic and some assembly for Atmel AVR microcontrollers (my other hobby) besides C++. I found a great deal of similarity between basic and C++. C++is just a lot more flexible and powerful

Okay, thanks for the advice. I'll take a look at the links you gave me, arras. They sound good for a beginner like me.

any projects to see with GMIrrlicht yet?

Post by Wolf Dreamer »

To those using GMIrrlicht , how far has anyone gotten with it?

I scanned the official Game Maker forum, but don't see much there.

My own forum is mostly dead, but if no one has any place else for GMIrrlicht users to be, might as well hang out there.

http://p067.ezboard.com/fwolfdreamersga ... forumfrm20

The other forum rooms dedicated to various 3d engines designed with Game Maker, such as freegadgets, have a few people still posting.

I'm wondering if anyone has made anything with it yet. I played around for awhile when it first came out, but gave up on it for various reasons.

Game Maker does have such a wonderful simplified and logical way of making games, with the icons used to help visualize everything, etc. that I hope one day someone does find a way to make Irrlicht either run well with it, or simply run with something that mimics the format.
