Maps

What does everyone suggest for making maps and such for irrlicht? I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, so I apologize.

is irrEdit my best bet, then just load the maps in when they're .irr files? I was fooling around with the tutorial that demonstrates loading Quake 3 maps, and I downloaded another to see how it'd work, but it wouldn't. So, I'm kinda confused as to what my options are as far as making maps go.

Quake 3 maps rarely load perfectly in irrlicht i've found, mainly due to missing files as the maps rely on you having Quake 3 installed to use standard textures and the like.

irrEdit is definitely a tool that would be good to use to construct your maps. You can build up how the map should look, such as buildings or structures or items rather than having to code where they're placed yourself which would be quite a chore.

Personally i really like Milkshape and i found it really easy to use. It's got a 30 day trial and then it's only about $25 (around £12) if you want to keep using it (but i think i managed to keep using it long after the 30 day trial..). I've bought a license for it and will never regret that!

Blender is a free modeller which is apparently very good but personally i haven't the first clue about how to use it, i found that it's not very good people who don't understand how modelling programs work, whereas i found Milkshape to be very easy to get to grips with.

What sort of maps are you looking to make? Outdoors, indoors, both?

Both. Mostly indoor, though some parts I would like to be outdoors (ie, a house and then you could go outside of it for 10 meters or so).

[edit]
Is it easy to make a map in Milkshape and then have it load up in irrlicht? Or do you have to pass it through something to convert it to a type that the engine knows?

Well, Irrlicht support loading .ms3d which is the MilkShape format so if you made something with MilkShape you can just save and load, no conversion needed.
