Blender or Milkshape3D
Blender or Milkshape3D
I'm at a loss which modeler I should use. I hope models with animations, material effects and shaders can be exported completely, and act on the irrlicht like Sidney in sample.
I'm supposed to use Blender or Milkshape3D. About blender some troubles are reported. Then must I select the latter? Will Milkshape enable to realize my hope?
I wanna hear experienced men's opinion.

I use milkshape for all my (amatuer) modelling but Blender seems to be the choice for animation...
I don't know anything about blender really but it's free and milkshape isn't (but is very cheap). milkshape doesn't have any shader support (blender might) but it doesn't stop you tagging an object so that when you load it in irrlicht you know that you want to apply a shader to it.
Basically milkshape is a program you can pick up without having to read any documentation/tutorials and you'll be able to get the job done with it. Blender is probably more powerful and maybe a bit more suited to your needs but will require you to read a fair amount of tutorials i should think. Personally when i've ever looked at blender i haven't had a clue how to use the interface to get anything done what so ever... But apparently if you actually go through some tutorials it becomes very clear how to use it.

I'd go for blender if you, as well, want a full 3d solution for many other needs. And have patience and ability in 3D.
I learnt it almost no look at the doc: that is, if already you have experience in 3d, it's not so mcuha needed. yet convenient (I am usually over anxious and just guess clicking the buttons, lol .Blender now is more "standard" in some ways... )
definitely, learning with the online doc in blender.org, is time consuming, as you're learning a full 3d package which is not that similar to others, but it can be done.
For character animation, sorry, I do animate, but beats very clearly milkshape. besides in blender have wide rendering capabilities. Not included by default, available many free plugins: Gandalf one of b3d rocks wildely. And works with irrlicht. Withblender, you can both generate the lightmaps (using verry nice AO lightgs and shadows) , and do the character animation, with loads of anim tools.
For statics, well, milkshape is extremely handy, with formats already default. Anyway... Nothing you couldn't do with Blender.
Summarizing (am also milkshape registered user) , a bit in the line of JP, but knowing Blender's capabilities till some extent as worked very well inmy tasks, Blender is surely harder, yet in the end, more powerful. Maybe not for ocasional model. But if you go a bit farer, may be of a lot of interest...
Am not a fanboy anyway: I handle a collection of 3D packages. You can do it with whatever the tool... neither I do see the need of telling everywhere use blender.. I just say in my case it did worth.. While I love comercial packages.

Either we've been reading different threads, or one of us is getting their internet connection from Bizarro World.

You use a mouse instead of a trackball? Well, I guess it takes all sorts.torleif wrote:Other programs seem to be orientated towards retards who can barely use a mouse.

You win; I only have an A5 tablet. However, my input device of choice is the Microsoft Trackball Explorer. You can tell it's great, because Microsoft stopped making it. $200 and rising on eBay. I'm planning to use my collection as a retirement fund, once word gets out how good they are.

way to go for making friends, lol. XDBlender is fantastic once you get a grasp using it, and you can wow people with tearing up a model with the key shortcuts.
Other programs seem to be orientated towards retards who can barely use a mouse.
Max , Maya and XSI aren't for retards.. are freakingly complex(and powerful, more than Blender..and I handle one of those deeply, as well as Blender ) by themselves...
And mouse can be uber fast if well used as well, best is the fastest combination of both, be it 2d or 3d work.

truespace used to have an x export. Wether if it'd work , and if support character animation, is something you can easily test...

blender
Blender of course!, it has all the features neaded for game models, and you can do all your cutscenes with it to. Not to be overlooked is the fact that it,s opensource and free whereas milkshape is 100$.
Blender is better by far.
