If there's a problem there's no point in sitting around praying for it to get better. Do you know how many of our ancestors died to get us free speech, free elections and equal rights?

It's almost offensive the amount of people who think it will. It really does give a window for people like dubba to claim "I invaded Iraq because god told me too" or "The Jews are conspiring to kill us, lets gas them"

I don't mean to be cynical about faith, but we really did give a lot of lives so we wouldn't have to deal with this crap.

Get down to the polling booth and vote for someone who doesn't want to throw poop in the fan. Pick up poster and go protest wars/ unequal treatment and workers rights. There's no point in doing nothing. Your grand parents literally gave limb and life to get you those rights, so use them.

torlief..... i am from india......one of the oldest cultures with rich heritage....

our core thing is universal well ness.....praying means not simply sitting around always and only that....Acording to indian system praying means refining ourself and leading others to such goodness.....

Indian wont speak simply god...they practice and show it by goodness..but this may be absent in our youth....

What you are saying is some practical democray....life is far beyond that...

i think so....

But surely praying is a religious thing so you have to believe in religion to pray, otherwise it won't be doing anything and you have to be praying to the right god (as there can be at most only one (or at least one religion's god or gods)) so it's all a bit pointless. And as torleif says you're better off being pro active and actually trying to change things yourself ;)

Pascal's Wager would suggest that you might as well pray while you're otherwise occupied, e.g. when you're perched on the porcelain altar.

Aye if you're worried about the existence of god then pascal's wager is fairly sound (although Dawkins God Delusion book is excellent for debunking any reason for believing in a god) but if you don't care whether god exists and can think of better ways of spending your time then it's a bit of a waste

Oh goody a religion thread
A wonderful opportunity to spread the seeds of the semi-religious philosophy I subscribe to! (tl;dr: God is our daughter)

On topic: Anything that says "share, spread, feel good" sounds more like an exercise in memetics than something of real value. I'm not saying things need to be practical to have worth, however most people here are probably incompatible with any memes with the word "prayer" in them because sciencey-types generally find such things offensive, they conflict with our own vicious dogmatic belief systems!

Lead balloon anyone?

You have good points in the contradiction of religious views, it's a major stumbling block for them. oh, and lead balloons can fly. I saw it on mythbusters =D

Regarding the philosophy of Realistic Monism, I can't believe in it.
My logic may be fallacious by ignoring Monisms evidence, But any form of determinism cuts out the chance of freewill. And nobody on earth wants to hear that from the moment they where born, their lives have already been determined.

I may not believe in god(s), but that's one thing I have to believe in. Choice of ones actions make the individual accountable for what they do. That's why we blame the person when they write a spelling mistake, not the pen.
