there are plenty of packages you could try, but I'm sure that Blender is most powerful FREE application you could try.

.B3D and .X are probably your best bet for skinned-boned animated characters, or .MD2 for the simplest vertex-animated characters

Blender all the way. Have a test of 2.48a....

heck am even doing all texturing with and workflow pretty non linear, fixing mesh, which as well fix automatically uvs as I go 3d and 2d painting the textures...

I even am an owner of license of CFX...trust me...CFX was extremely nice and cheap for the moment. Blender now is better in the long and short run...

hard to learn, yep. But these days, no more than any 3D package... still pretty different to th eother UIs (is easier to adapt between max and maya, yet not so much with blender, xsi or LW, different beasts, imo... )

and yep, b3d, or x. Still think md5 is superior format, but...!
Finally making games again!

ok for me ^^ LW, blender ,maya , Metasequoia, gmax, XSI mod tools

Look for free Blender is very good , xsi mod tools in stand by in this moment .

In a first time blender is confused because port be linux , but you can make all
for animation Character FX ;)

Im designer ;)

For texturing not need used photoshop , you have .paint or artweaver if you have a graphic tablet

Graphic tablet use one trust A4 (lats model) price 100 € very very good , not need to use wacom more expensive for same work :)

Its my "recomendation" :D
