Fighters Tactical Warfare - an irrlicht flight sim

Post by cobra »

Hello! This is my simulator that I am programming for Windows in C++, using the fantastic Irrlicht engine. :)

This was actually my FIRST project using Irrlicht, I need a graphics engine quickly, and I started developing my flight sim the second day I had Irrlicht. Well, here I am now, 5 months later with my flight simulator growing.

You don't know this yet, but I am a huge aviation guy. I love tactics, military, and flying/aircraft/aviation.

The website is: http://www.fighterstw.co.nr
And yes, on the old screenshots, it is using the default terrain that comes with irrlicht. It is now changed with my terrain and my textures, so none of it is irrlicht materials now.

It is set in the Cold War, which spans a long time from 1948 to 1991, and there is a time set feature to limit it to say, 1950s F3H Demon and MiG-15s to 1960s-70s MiG-25 Foxbat and F-15A.

New screenshots will be coming, and they will look a lot better.

It has great water thanks to Irrlicht's water scene node, so it reflects light and has moving waves, with LOD able to be set by the user, and depending on how many frame rates the sim is currently running at (stole that feature from Microsoft Flight Simulator :P)

I hope to make it a REAL simulator, like my favorite, and most realistic sim, Falcon 4.0 Allied Force.

Irrlicht has provided amazing results for it. I love the Irrlicht Engine!

Anyway, I'm programming it alone.

Thanks for reading!

That's nice ... I like flight simulators. I would like to see the F-86 Sabre, my favorite shortly-after-WW2-plane. Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys! Very encouraging. :)

Well, the guy that I have do the models for me, I'll see if he has an F-86.. I'd love to have one as well.

Also I would like to have a MiG-21 Fishbed, F-4 Phantom, A-1H, AH-1, F-101 Voodoo, F-100 Super Sabre, etc. but maybe the modding community can fill in the gaps, since it's highly moddable.

That looks really cool. I'm a big fan of sims, and a plane modeler myself.

Though I would offer a word of caution about making a realistic sim that covers 1948 to present. It is your first project, and remember that even Falcon 4.0, the most complex avionics simulation of all time, only had one flyable plane!

Even the developers of IL-2, a somewhat simpler game-oriented sim, produced dozens of games before attempting their first flight sim. And in early development it was very simple and crude, with just the IL-2 as a flyable.

Hello. Thanks for your kind words!

Yeah, there will only be the F3H Demon, Su-22 Fitter, RA-5C Vigilante, BAC Lightning, and Mirage IIIE first flyable ones, the rest will be AI.

And about the one flyable aircraft, that is usually better in my book. I've played LOMAC, MSFS, and several other sims, yet none of them come close to Falcon. But then again I choose realism over variety, but sometimes variety is nice to have as well.

The simulator is highly modable already, so you can change basically everything but the sim itself.

It will have tangible 3D cockpits as well, which I got working in basic form a few weeks ago.

More simmers here than I though. That's nice to know.

You should priorotize. The AI planes should be low poly because they'r seen from a distance while the cockpit and the player plane should be higher poly because that thing is seen al the time.

Some may be flightly lower poly. But having decent looking AI is good, so they will be about Falcon 4 level... the more seen aircraft in the AI will be higher poly, more rare aircraft will be lower poly.

I've ever made a plane shooting game, too. There may be difficult problems, but try your best.
