real time terrain modification...

I need a method to modify the terrain of my game in real time...
i hit the mouse on one point, and i need that there will be create a crater,a mountain, and other things...
how can i do?
CPU: AMD PHENOMII X6 1090T BE 3,2GHZ
RAM : OCZ 8GB 2*4GB DDR3 LOW VOLTAGE 1333
VGA: GeForce GTX680 2GB

i don't know which math function i need to use...

Find all vertices within some radius of the impact position. Move the vertices vertically based on the distance from the center of the impact position.

Move the vertices vertically based on the distance from the center of the impact position.
For non linear effect use it squared or use sinus function.
